The first big jolt of the week came from LSU’s SEC-mandated injury report, and it immediately put the spotlight on Lane Kiffin’s return to Ole Miss. Star quarterback Sam Leavitt was listed doubtful for the game, and that one designation set off a wave of skepticism before the weekend even arrived.
That reaction makes sense. Fans don’t want a marquee matchup dulled by one of the best players on either side being unavailable, especially when the game already has plenty of heat around it.
A doubtful tag usually points toward a player not taking the field, but the conversation didn’t stop there. Some fans were quick to wonder whether Kiffin’s team might be working the system again.
There’s a reason that suspicion showed up so fast. Georgia insider Graham Coffey pointed back to last year’s Georgia-Ole Miss matchup, when the Rebels’ injury report had 26 players on it Wednesday before dropping to just 10 two days later. In that same game, one wide receiver who had been listed doubtful ended up playing 60 snaps, while two defenders who were both questionable combined for 90 snaps, 10 pressures and four sacks.
Coffey summed up the uncertainty this way on social media: “I’d keep an open mind on Leavitt and I certainly wouldn’t rush to place any bets based on this news”
He also noted, “In the 2024 UGA-Ole Miss game, the initial injury report for Ole Miss had 26 players. It shrunk to 15 on Thursday and 10 on Friday”
And he added, “WR Jordan Watkins was doubtful on Wednesday. He…”
Of course, gaming injury reports runs against SEC rules. The problem is that there isn’t an easy way to prove when a team is doing it, so even if suspicion hangs in the air, it’s not something that would automatically bring punishment. That leaves Leavitt’s status in the same place it started: uncertain, with no shortage of doubt around the doubtful tag.
Georgia’s Wednesday report looked a lot more straightforward. Kirby Smart had only three Bulldogs listed, and all three were ruled out for Saturday’s trip to Arkansas.
Chase Linton remains out, and he still has not made his first appearance this season. At this point, the exact nature of his injury isn’t clear, though Georgia would certainly like to have him back in time for next week’s game against Oklahoma in Athens.
Freshmen Justice Fitzpatrick and Tyriq Green were also ruled out. Both are reserve defensive backs, so Georgia’s secondary should be able to absorb those absences. Green did score two touchdowns in last week’s win over Western Kentucky, so there was at least a case to be made for a bigger role.
The contrast between Smart and Kiffin is hard to miss. Both are elite coaches, but Kiffin tends to live in the glare of attention while Smart is more comfortable letting the game do the talking. Georgia and LSU don’t meet in the regular season this year, though a rematch could still happen in the SEC Championship Game or the College Football Playoff.
