Georgia didn’t make a habit of shopping heavily in the Transfer Portal this offseason, but one of its few additions may end up mattering in a big way.
The Bulldogs brought in just 15 transfers, the fewest of any SEC team. Kirby Smart could afford to stay selective because Georgia returns the fifth-most production in the country, but that didn’t stop the staff from targeting players who can help right away. Oklahoma defensive back Gentry Williams fits that bill.
Williams had a solid run with the Sooners before heading to Athens this spring, and Georgia clearly has a need for him. The Bulldogs’ defense had an uneven year last season, and one of the biggest issues was the secondary giving up too many explosive plays over the top. The front didn’t always help by getting enough pressure, but the back end had its own problems too.
Now Williams joins a secondary that already has experienced pieces in KJ Bolden and Ellis Robinson. He may not jump either of them on the depth chart, but Georgia will need him in key moments throughout the season.
That’s why Brent Venables’ comments at SEC Media Days on Monday stood out. The Oklahoma head coach didn’t hide how highly he thinks of his former player.
"Whatever role he ends up having at Georgia, he's going to over-deliver."
Venables also said, "I'm not going to like it very much, but I love Gentry."
For Georgia, that kind of praise is exactly what it wanted to hear. Williams could be especially important when the Bulldogs host Oklahoma in week four. Georgia opens with two home games, then goes to Arkansas before that showdown, and if Oklahoma gets past Michigan in week two, the matchup should carry top-10 weight.
That game could have real SEC Championship implications, which only raises the importance of Georgia having Williams ready for whatever comes his way. Venables was complimentary of Georgia too, calling the Bulldogs the "golden standard" in college football over the past few years and pointing to their home record under Smart.
Maybe he was simply being generous. Or maybe he was trying to make sure Georgia doesn’t take Oklahoma lightly.
