Mississippi State Just Became Part Of A Bigger Alabama Playoff Push

Alabama's playoff aspirations hinge on their upcoming clash with Georgia, poised to redefine the resume rankings.

Alabama has put itself right in the middle of the College Football Playoff race’s most interesting math problem. After climbing from No. 4 to No. 2 in this week’s resume rankings thanks to a road win at Mississippi State, the Crimson Tide are now close enough to Texas that one more statement result could flip the order.

That statement result would come this week against Georgia. A win over the Bulldogs would likely push Alabama past the Longhorns, even if Texas handles Oklahoma. Beating the Sooners - even on a neutral field - simply does not carry the same weight in this system as knocking off an elite Georgia team, and that distinction matters a lot here.

The resume rankings are built on a straightforward idea: every victory gets a value between 0 and 1, based on how likely an average No. 25 team in the CBS Sports 138 would be to win that game. The opponent’s ranking and the location of the game both factor into the number.

That’s why a home win over No. 2 Georgia would be worth +0.89 to Alabama’s resume score. In this framework, an average No. 25 team would only beat the Bulldogs 11% of the time at home, so the payoff for Alabama would be enormous.

The system also tries to separate real damage from the empty rhetoric around so-called “good losses.” The point isn’t to hand out style points for showing up against strong opponents. By that logic, as the ranking explains, “Well, if that’s the case, then let's put Arkansas in the CFP.”

Still, losses are not treated equally. If Alabama were to lose to Georgia, the hit would be only -0.11 to its resume score, a relatively small dent because an average No. 25 team would be expected to lose that home game 89% of the time.

That stands in sharp contrast to a bad loss like Ohio State taking a defeat at home to No. 73 Maryland, which would cost the Buckeyes a far harsher -0.87 and leave much more to clean up.

Here is where the meritocratic resume rankings stand entering Week 6.

Georgia-Alabama Suddenly Has A Weather Threat Fans Can't Ignore

A storm system that has already forced evacuations along the Gulf Coast is now creating an uneasy backdrop for Saturday nights Georgia-Alabama game, even as Alabama says it has not changed its plans. Hurricane Isaias has strengthened into a Category 3 storm, and while several other college football games have already been shuffled or scrapped because of the weather, this one remains on the schedule for now.

The concern is less about the start time than the path ahead, with the National Weather Service forecasting the storm to affect central Alabama on Saturday afternoon before moving on through Tennessee and Kentucky. For Georgia fans making the trip, it adds another layer of uncertainty to a marquee matchup that was already going to draw plenty of attention before weather entered the conversation. [Read more 🡒]

Kirby Smart Faces A Huge Alabama Chance Georgia Fans Know Well

Nick Sabans praise landed with real weight around Georgia, calling the Bulldogs the most complete team he has seen this season and pointing to the balance on both sides of the ball. It is the kind of compliment that only adds to the urgency around what comes next, because Georgia has built itself into a team that can win with scoring, with defense, and with the sort of depth that keeps it in the conversation no matter the setting.

For Kirby Smart, the upcoming Alabama game is about more than another marquee matchup. It sits right in the middle of a familiar road for Georgia fans, one that has shaped his legacy, tested his record against the Tide, and helped define the Bulldogs SEC championship push. With Kalen DeBoer now leading Alabama, the stakes feel new in some ways, but the significance for Smart and Georgia remains the same. [Read more 🡒]

Georgia's Early 2028 Surge Has Kirby Smart Building Something Big

Georgias 2028 recruiting picture got another boost with the addition of safety Nick Carroll, a prospect whose early commitment gives Kirby Smarts staff more momentum in the class. Carroll is already regarded as one of the better defensive backs in the cycle, and his decision adds to a Georgia group that has been climbing in the national rankings while the cycle is still in its early stages.

For the Bulldogs, the appeal is as much about where the class stands now as where it could go next. Carroll gives Georgia another highly regarded in-state piece to build around, and his pledge helps keep the program positioned among the early leaders as Smart continues to stack talent for the future.
