Milton Faces A Huge Region Test With Playoff Buzz Rising

Milton and Gainesville, both boasting impressive rosters and records, are set to clash under the Friday night lights in a critical high school football showdown with playoff implications.

Friday night’s matchup in Gainesville brings together two teams with plenty of recent success and a lot of college talent on both sidelines. Milton rolls in at 6-1, while Gainesville is 6-2, and with the playoffs closing in, this Class 6A Region 7 game has the feel of a late-season measuring stick.

The last time these teams met, Gainesville got the upper hand. The Red Elephants beat Milton 28-16 last October, and that result is part of what makes this one worth watching again.

Kickoff is set for Friday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. ET at City Park in Gainesville, Ga. Fans can stream the game live on the NFHS Network.

Milton has been one of Georgia’s heavyweights for a while, and the Eagles’ recent résumé says plenty. Two seasons ago, they went 15-0 and won the GHSA Class 6A state championship. This year’s team is once again powered by senior quarterback Derrick Baker, a Tennessee commit who has thrown 20 touchdown passes.

The Eagles’ offense gives Baker plenty to work with. Sheldon Achison is part of the backfield, while wide receiver Jordan Carrasquillo, an Indiana commit, and 4-star tight end Grant Haviland, a Vanderbilt commit, add more firepower.

Milton’s defense has its own headline names, starting with linebacker Blaize Battaglia, a Boston College pledge. Edge rusher Roman Tumminia and safety Malik Role are also central pieces for the Eagles.

Gainesville has built its own strong recent track record. The Red Elephants reached last year’s GHSA 6A state title game, and their lone state championship came in 2012 under current Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.

This season, Gainesville is led by dual-threat quarterback Kharim Hughley, a Clemson commit. The supporting cast includes running back Nigel Newkirk, an Alabama commit, along with linebackers Jeremiah Proctor, a Pitt commit, and Darryn Williams, a Wake Forest commit, plus cornerback Zachary Ingram, a Miami (OH) commit.

Georgia Gets An Early Road Test Mike White Needed To See

The next step in Georgias preseason tune-up arrives with a much different feel, as the Bulldogs head into an exhibition matchup against Clemson at 6:30 p.m. ET. After Georgias 87-67 win over Charlotte in its first exhibition, coach Mike White has been treating these October games as a chance to sort through personnel, learn about combinations and get a clearer read on what this roster can handle before the games count.

Facing Clemson brings a different level of urgency than a typical preseason outing, especially with the Tigers bringing back key pieces from last season. For Georgia, that makes this more than just another exhibition on the calendar. It is the kind of early road test White wanted to see, one that should reveal a lot about how the Bulldogs respond when the opponent looks more like the teams they will have to navigate once the schedule starts for real. Georgia Fans Now Have To Watch A Brutal New SEC Reality

Week 7 was a reminder that the SEC race can flip fast, and Georgia was right in the middle of it. A weekend that saw the Bulldogs, Florida, Tennessee and Ole Miss all go down sent a fresh jolt through the AP poll and tightened the margins at the top, where every loss now feels like it carries more weight than it did a month ago.

The bigger problem for Georgia fans is that the schedule is not offering much breathing room. Week 8 brings another slate of games that could shuffle the conference picture again, with LSU at Auburn, Oklahoma at Mississippi State, Tennessee at South Carolina and Ole Miss at Texas all carrying real stakes for the standings and the College Football Playoff conversation. Even for a program used to living under pressure, the margin for error in the SEC is starting to look brutal. [Read more 🡒]

Gunner Stockton's Auburn Game Put His National Standing Under Pressure

The quarterback picture around the country got a jolt in Week 7, and that naturally put Gunner Stockton back under the microscope. With several top passers dealing with injury questions or uneven performances, the national pecking order is shifting fast, and Stocktons place in it depends on how well he keeps stacking solid outings for Georgia while others around him stumble.

Ohio States Julian Sayin may be out for the season, a reminder of how quickly the conversation can change, while Darian Mensah of Miami stays anchored at No. 1 in the updated top-seven ranking. New faces such as USCs Jayden Maiava and Arizonas Noah Fifita have forced their way into the mix, leaving Stockton in a crowded field where every weekend seems to matter a little more than the last.
