Mike Bobo came into this season with plenty of noise around him, but two weeks in, Georgia’s offense is doing all the talking.
The Bulldogs are sitting on the nation’s top scoring attack through the first two weeks, averaging 66.5 points per game. That kind of production doesn’t leave much room for critics, and Bobo has at least answered the offseason doubts with a start that looks very different from the one many fans and analysts expected.
A big part of the conversation all offseason centered on Georgia needing more explosiveness on offense. Bobo talked about it at length, Kirby Smart did too, and Gunner Stockton kept mentioning it as well. Georgia’s early scoring surge makes the point hard to miss: the Bulldogs are not just moving the ball, they’re creating more chances for big plays.
Stockton has been taking more shots down the field than he did last season. Georgia hasn’t had to lean on that part of the passing game every drive, given how thoroughly it has handled its first two opponents, but when Stockton has been in the game, the Bulldogs have still been pushing vertically. That was part of the point this offseason, and so far it has shown up.
Bobo still leans on his screen game, and that hasn’t changed. Those plays may not grab the most attention, but they usually work, and effectiveness matters more than flash. If Georgia keeps pairing those screens with deep shots, and if Nate Frazier keeps finding the end zone on the ground, this offense could become a nightmare to slow down.
Of course, the real test is still ahead.
The biggest knock on Bobo has been his inability to win a playoff game at Georgia. The last two SEC championships matter, and they should be part of any fair evaluation of his tenure, but the postseason is where the conversation gets serious. Fans have also pointed to Georgia’s loss to Ole Miss last year, when the Bulldogs scored 34 points, and for whatever reason much of that blame landed on Bobo.
Fair or not, the only way to shut that down is to win a playoff game.
Georgia is expected to reach the College Football Playoff again this season, and if the Bulldogs go a fourth straight year without winning a playoff game, frustration will be easy to understand. Even if a loss isn’t entirely on Bobo, he’s going to absorb some of the heat. That’s why Georgia’s path this season is simple: win at least one playoff game and show this offense can hold up when the lights are brightest.
