Mike Bobo has Georgia’s offense doing something Todd Monken never managed to pull off in Athens, and that alone has turned a lot of heads after Saturday’s rout of Arkansas.
Georgia rolled to a blowout win in its SEC opener and first road game of the season, improving to 3-0 and clearing every test it has seen so far. The Bulldogs have looked sharp across the board, but the offense has been the most eye-catching part of the start.
Through three games, Georgia has scored 178 points under Bobo. That total stands out because Monken never reached that number in any three-game stretch during his time as Georgia’s offensive coordinator. His best three-game run topped out at 158.
That’s the kind of number that gives Bobo a real talking point, especially with the criticism he has taken from some Georgia fans. Monken remains the benchmark for plenty of people in Athens, and many still see him as the standard Bobo has been chasing.
The comparison is fair in some ways, since Georgia has not won a playoff game since Monken left. But Bobo has also played a part in the Bulldogs’ recent success, including helping them win the last two SEC championships.
That was enough for Kirby Smart to give Bobo a contract extension this offseason, even if plenty of fans were unhappy about it and felt he had not earned that kind of faith.
So far, though, the offense has answered back. The Bulldogs have piled up points, and Bobo’s group has been the engine behind the fast start. At the same time, there is a clear caveat here: Georgia has done this against opponents that were far from equal on paper, so the hot start has to be viewed with some caution.
That said, Georgia has also faced plenty of overmatched teams during Monken’s tenure and still never produced a three-game scoring stretch like this one.
The next chance for Bobo to change the conversation comes in Week 4, when Oklahoma visits. That matchup should tell a lot more about where Georgia’s offense really stands.
The Sooners are 2-1 after a loss at Michigan and a close home win over New Mexico. Georgia will enter that game as a heavy favorite, but Oklahoma’s defense is the part that demands attention.
The Sooners have allowed only 7.6 points per game this season. Michigan managed 17 against them in Week 2, which still counts as a strong showing in a tough road environment.
Oklahoma’s offense has not been especially dangerous, but its defense looks legitimate, and that makes next week a real test for Bobo and Georgia. If the Bulldogs put up points against that group, it may be the kind of performance that finally wins over some of the skeptics.
