Hartley emphasized the importance of these summer camps, drawing from lessons learned under Coach Saban. "Getting players on campus and seeing them firsthand is critical for us," Hartley explained. Keyes was one of those early discoveries, making a strong impression before many other schools even knew his name.
Keyes wasn't the only standout; Texas Tech signee Matt Ludwig also caught the coaches' attention. However, Keyes stood out with his impressive frame and skill set.
"He had the size and length, but what really set him apart was his ability to run well for his size and catch everything thrown his way," Hartley noted. "His route-running was clean, showing his receiver background, but his body type screamed tight end."
To confirm his instincts, Hartley reviewed Keyes' junior film. What he saw only reinforced his initial impressions.
Keyes excelled for a strong team, which only lost to Bryce Underwood's squad in the playoffs. Hartley remarked on the uniqueness of tight end recruiting, noting that players come in various shapes and sizes.
"Lincoln was a bigger kid, and I love players with a wide receiver background who can grow into their roles," he added.
