Kirby Smart is already moving Georgia’s attention past the fireworks of a 70-20 win and straight toward the first real road test of the season.
The Bulldogs open SEC play at Arkansas at noon next Saturday, and Smart made it clear he isn’t interested in getting swept up in the numbers after Georgia hung 70 on Western Kentucky. His message was simple: the schedule gets real now, and road games in this league demand something different.
“We don’t want to anoint anybody right now because they recover fumbles or catch touchdowns,” Smart said, pushing back on the kind of praise that follows a lopsided win over a Conference USA opponent. “When you score 70, you’re gonna have a lot of fluffy stats.
“I don’t care about stats. I really do not care… you guys will reward them, you will say we scored 70 and 60, and the only thing I’m worried about is how the hell we’re gonna play on the road next week.”
Smart, in his 11th season leading UGA, said the switch to conference play changes everything.
“it’s on to the SEC now, and it’s just a different league; you play this league on the road, and over the years that I have and coached, it’s a different environment. Every game is really hard - especially on the road, especially the first one.”
Arkansas will arrive with plenty to prove after getting thumped at No. 20 Utah, 43-10, late Saturday night. Coach Ryan Silverfield said his team was frustrated after the loss.
“Clearly not good enough in all three phases of the game,” Silverfield said, per SI.com.
“Guys in the locker room were frustrated. They’re pissed off.
They’re angry, and I said... those are the feeling you’re supposed to have. We have to find a way to quickly learn from this game and bounce back.”
The Razorbacks had opened with a 31-14 win over FCS-level North Alabama, but the trip to Salt Lake City went sideways quickly. Utah ran for 141 yards while Arkansas managed just 61, and the Utes built a 29-3 halftime lead before stretching it to 43-3. Arkansas’ only touchdown came with 6:43 left on a tipped pass.
The bigger picture around Arkansas is rough, too. The Razorbacks have 81 new players on Silverfield’s first-year roster, and they’ve dropped 11 straight SEC games dating back to a 58-25 win over Mississippi State in the 2024 season.
Silverfield also carries some Georgia baggage from his time at Memphis in 2025, when he made comments that irritated Bulldogs fans about off-field issues and Sunday accountability meetings. Per CBS Sports, he said his program began with what he called “not our standard” errors.
“We always start with a negative,” Silverfield said, per CBS Sports. “And the ‘not our standard’ is, ‘Georgia wide receiver arrested for driving 900 miles per hour over the speed limit.’ That’s a weekly occurrence….”
After taking the Arkansas job following last season, Silverfield later addressed those remarks and said he had nothing but respect for Smart.
“I’ve got the deep, most respect for Kirby Smart and the Georgia athletic department and everything that he’s about,” Silverfield said in Tampa in July. “Obviously, he’s done it at a high level, so certainly a lot of respect for him.
When it occurred, I reached out to him. He’s always been great to me.
Even at my time at Memphis. He allowed us to come be a part of the camps.
“I think he knew that it was no ill will. Listen, I’ve got a lot or respect for him and what they’re doing.”
Georgia’s recent history in this matchup is one-sided. The Bulldogs beat Arkansas 37-0 in their last meeting in 2021, won 37-20 in Fayetteville in the opening game of the Covid-shortened 2020 season, and are 5-0 all-time in Razorback Stadium. Georgia is also 6-0 all-time when these teams meet in Arkansas, including a win in Little Rock in 2014.
The broader SEC picture has only added to the league’s early momentum. The conference went undefeated in opening week for the first time since 1997, then followed that with Texas’ 24-3 win over No.
1 Ohio State, Mississippi State’s 38-13 victory at Minnesota, and Oklahoma’s 17-10 loss at Michigan. Georgia’s next opponent after Arkansas is Oklahoma in two weeks.
