Gunner Stockton: Georgia's Quarterback Ready to Lead
A year ago, the question of who would be Georgia's starting quarterback lingered like a fog over Athens. Gunner Stockton had shown flashes of brilliance, but could he handle the immense pressure that comes with leading a powerhouse like Georgia?
Fast forward to today, and Stockton has not only answered those doubts but has elevated his profile to the point of meeting former President Donald Trump. When asked about the encounter, Stockton's response was as poised as his play on the field.
"Meeting any president is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," he said, demonstrating the diplomatic grace expected of a team leader.
But the spotlight wasn't solely on presidential meetings. Stockton faced questions about Georgia's tough loss to Ole Miss, where he was outdueled by Trinidad Chambliss in a 39-34 heartbreaker. "It definitely left a bad taste," Stockton admitted, underscoring his determination to learn and improve.
As he embarks on his fifth spring practice, Stockton is focused on elevating his game from very good to great. The 2026 season places higher expectations on him, with Georgia's eyes set firmly on a national championship. "Being a quarterback means being one of the best leaders," Stockton reflected, emphasizing his role as a seasoned veteran ready to guide his team.
Georgia's head coach, Kirby Smart, is pushing the offense to become more explosive this year. Last season, Georgia ranked 10th out of 12 in plays of 20 yards or more among College Football Playoff teams.
Smart wants Stockton and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo to better anticipate and create these big plays. "Take what the defense gives you and use the skill set of those around you," Smart advised, pointing to the need for pre-snap reads and strategic execution.
Stockton will navigate this challenge with a new supporting cast. With his former left tackle eyeing the NFL and six of his top seven pass catchers gone, Stockton welcomes Georgia Tech transfer Isiah Canion and the return of the top two running backs. Despite these changes, Stockton remains unfazed, exuding a calm confidence that his teammates have noted.
"It's just confidence," tight end Lawson Luckie observed, highlighting Stockton's growth. "The only thing that builds in-game confidence is playing in games."
While spring practice is crucial, Stockton's true test will come in the high-stakes games of December and January. His goals remain steadfast: be a great leader, propel Georgia forward, and capture that elusive national championship.
Reflecting on his journey, Stockton shared, "I want to make my family proud and be a reflection of the University of Georgia. I don’t want to let Georgia down." With the 2025 season behind him, Stockton is more prepared than ever to achieve these aspirations.
