Gunner Stockton didn’t try to spin away Georgia’s 20-17 loss to Auburn. He kept coming back to the same point: the ball has to be protected.
After the game, the Georgia quarterback said the turnovers were on him and credited Auburn for bringing the kind of effort that made every mistake costly.
“Yeah, credit Auburn, they did a good job. They came out and played hard and, um, you know, they, they had a good football team and I just need to execute a little bit better and take care of the ball.”
Stockton also addressed the fumble directly, saying the fix starts with cleaner ball security.
“Yeah, just got to, uh, you know, protect the ball and, um, you know, at the end of the day you got to... Ball security, it's everybody's, uh, livelihood, so I just got to protect the ball.”
He later described the play as either a strip or contact from a helmet, but his conclusion stayed the same.
“Yeah, I think it, I think it was a punch out or his helmet hit it. I just gotta get a little bit better as ball security.”
When asked what it feels like to see the ball on the ground, Stockton didn’t dress it up.
“Yeah, it's not a good feeling. Yeah.”
Stockton also said the loss won’t linger as Georgia heads into its bye week before Florida. For him, the message is about response, not panic.
“Yeah, it's all about how you respond, you know? It's just like life.
Life ain't supposed to be fairy tales and, uh, you know, pixie dust. Um, it's all about how you respond and get better and trying to get better every day and with everything we do.
So got to attack it.”
He said Kirby’s message was simple: Georgia has to clean things up.
“That we definitely got to play a little bit better. Auburn, they're a good team, came out and played us hard and, um, but definitely got to attack the bye week and, um, you know, one loss, you know, every one loss team can still do really good things, so...”
Stockton pushed back on any idea that the team had gotten comfortable.
“I wouldn't say that. I feel like our team, like we never quit, like we never, um...
Like this whole week, we didn't have the or like we didn't think we were on top of the world or nothing like that. We just gotta attack this bye week and get better.”
He said the group still believes in its fight.
“Our team, we never quit. I feel like that showed. I got to take care of the ball.”
Stockton also said he was not trying to duck out after the opening play.
“No. No, no. You got it.”
On Auburn’s defensive pressure, he gave the Tigers credit and said Georgia will have to study the tape to sort out why the offense had trouble moving the ball.
“Yeah, I don't know if it was, um, just the movement or, you know, um, just gotta look at it, see if we were executing the right way or what.”
As for the turnovers themselves, Stockton said Georgia wasn’t distracted by anything from the previous week.
“What, what- No, it really wasn't at all. Um, you know, we had, we'd, we made sure we buried Bama.
We weren't even thinking about that. We had a really good week of prep.
Everything was right. You know, sometimes, you have to look at yourself, look at the tape and see what's wrong.”
He also answered a question about taking a loss with a brief, blunt line.
“I’d never know.”
Stockton said there wasn’t any issue with the team’s mindset going into the game or coming out of it, and he believes the locker room’s makeup helps keep the intensity up even in SEC play.
“I think it isn't that hard. When you have a group of guys like in the locker room like we have, um, you know, we always... You show up to the, to the facility wanting to, wanting to play ball.
It's what you dream of. So, um, having that motivation, it isn't, it isn't hard.”
He finished by pointing to Auburn’s physical style and the need for Georgia to match it better after watching the tape.
“We watched the tape. They were physical and, um, we knew we had to be physical. But we'll have to see the tape and just get better.”

Auburn Just Lost A Key Defender As Georgia Watches Closely
Auburn entered its matchup with Georgia already short a linebacker, and the situation around Xavier Atkins only grew more consequential in the hours after the suspension was announced. Coach Alex Golesh said Atkins was not with the team for the game, leaving the Tigers to navigate a key absence in a spot Georgia usually likes to test with depth and tempo.
Atkins then added another layer by saying on social media that he plans to enter the transfer portal after the semester ends, turning a temporary team issue into a longer-term personnel question. For Georgia, it is the kind of development worth watching closely, especially with Auburn still sorting out what comes next for a defender who was no longer available when the teams met. Georgia Blew A Winnable Home Game In The Most Frustrating Way
Georgia had a home game there for the taking against Auburn, but the kind of mistakes that have a way of haunting a season took over instead. Penalties kept piling up, turnovers blunted momentum, and even with some solid individual efforts the Bulldogs could never fully settle into the rhythm they needed at Sanford Stadium. Craig Dandridge finished with 88 receiving yards, while Raylen Wilson turned in a busy defensive night with 10 solo tackles and a sack.
The frustration only deepened because Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown ran for 115 yards, which outpaced Georgias entire offense and underlined how often the Bulldogs were chasing the game. It was the sixth home loss of Kirby Smarts tenure, another reminder that even at home, Georgia can still beat itself when execution slips at the wrong time. [Read more 🡒]
Georgia Suddenly Faces Pressure To Rebound While Keeping Recruiting Momentum
Georgias latest slide in the AP poll came after a loss that exposed the kind of issues Kirby Smarts team usually avoids, with turnovers, penalties and injuries all piling up at the wrong time. Even so, the timing of the bye week gives the Bulldogs a chance to reset physically and mentally, and there is a real expectation inside the program that a healthier roster can help steady things when play resumes.
On the recruiting front, Georgia also picked up some good news with the commitment of Newton County athlete Braylon Miller, a late-blooming prospect who had previously pledged to Liberty. It is the kind of addition that helps soften the sting of a rough Saturday, and it also serves as a reminder that Georgia still has momentum on the trail even while it sorts through the pressure that comes with trying to rebound on the field.
