Georgia has a new name stepping into a major role at receiver, and Gunner Stockton isn’t hiding how much he likes what he’s seen from Isiah Canion.
With Zachariah Branch off to the NFL Draft after setting Georgia’s single-season receptions record last season, the Bulldogs are staring at a wide receiver room that suddenly has to absorb a huge loss. Replacing that kind of production won’t fall on one player alone, but Georgia did add a notable piece when Kirby Smart brought in the former Georgia Tech wideout from the Transfer Portal.
Stockton thinks Canion is ready to matter right away.
“He (Canion) is pretty special in pads,” Stockton said via dawgnation.com. “He looks awesome.
But he’s done a great job of, you know, working and doing everything in the offseason. If it’s, you know, when it’s winter workouts, then it goes to spring.
Like, he had a great spring, and just the work he’s been putting into it. And, you know, he’s buying into the culture.
You’d think he’s been here for three years or two years. But he’s a great guy to go in and work with every day.”
Canion’s resume at Georgia Tech gives Georgia a real reason to believe. Over two seasons with the Yellow Jackets, he put up 35 catches for 480 yards and four touchdowns in 2025, enough to establish himself as a legitimate Power Four receiver. Once he hit the portal, plenty of programs came calling, but he chose to stay close to home and land in Athens.
That move already looks like a good one from Stockton’s perspective. He said Canion has become a leader in the locker room and has already shown he can be an important part of the offense this fall.
Still, the comparison to Branch only goes so far. Branch’s game was built on speed and elusiveness, turning short throws into chunk plays. Canion brings a different look entirely, with the size and length that make him a tougher cover for corners.
And that difference may be exactly why Georgia wanted him. Even if he isn’t expected to match Branch’s record-setting production, Canion could fill another need for this offense: a dependable deep threat. Georgia has been looking for that kind of weapon for years, and Canion gives Stockton a target with a skill set that can stretch the field.
Stockton sounds convinced the Bulldogs added more than just another receiver. If Canion keeps trending the way he has, the rest of the country may learn his name quickly.
