John Mateer and Gunner Stockton are the latest college football quarterbacks to set off a summer debate online, and this one is all about the photos.
Mateer, the Oklahoma Sooners signal-caller who transferred in from Washington State, first grabbed the internet’s attention over the weekend when a sports media outlet shared an image that showed off his heavily built frame. The picture spread quickly because Mateer looked extremely muscular after months of strength work, a visual reminder of how far players can push themselves during summer training.
His on-field production last season backed up why Oklahoma wanted him. In 12 games, Mateer threw for 2,885 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while adding 431 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground.
Then Stockton jumped into the conversation. A football commentator pointed to Georgia backup Gunner Stockton and said he has an equally impressive summer physique, and another photo of Stockton surfaced online showing his power and muscle definition during workout drills. That was enough to split college football fans into two camps.
Stockton also had news off the field this offseason. On3’s Pete Nakos reported that he signed a new NIL deal with the Bulldogs for 2026. His representative, Faryn Healy of ESM, told On3 that Stockton could have earned 2 to 3 times as much by hitting the portal.
His 2025 numbers made the case for a bigger payday. Stockton started all 14 games and finished with 2,894 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also ran for 462 yards and 10 more touchdowns.

Stetson Bennetts Rams Future Suddenly Feels Far Less Secure
Stetson Bennetts place with the Rams has become a lot less comfortable now that Los Angeles has added first-round quarterback Ty Simpson to the mix. What had looked like a straightforward backup situation has turned into a real training-camp battle, even with reports suggesting Bennett has the early edge as the two jockey for position behind the starter.
For Bennett, the challenge is no longer just proving he can handle the job in camp, but making himself impossible to overlook as the Rams sort through what they want at quarterback beyond this season. Simpsons arrival gives the team a highly drafted alternative, and Bennett may have to keep winning every day to avoid finding himself on the outside looking in. [Read more 🡒]
Josh Pate Just Took A Wild Shot At Gunner Stockton
Josh Pates latest take on Gunner Stockton is the kind of offseason noise that tends to follow a Georgia quarterback, especially one stepping deeper into the spotlight with real expectations attached. Stockton has already helped Georgia win SEC championships, and his profile has risen with the team around him, but the debate over how much of the Bulldogs ceiling rests on his shoulders is clearly not going anywhere.
Stocktons numbers and improvement give Georgia plenty to work with heading into another critical season, yet the standard in Athens is never just about looking solid on paper. For Stockton, the conversation is increasingly about what Georgia does as a team and how much success the Bulldogs can stack when the games matter most, because that is where his place in program history will be judged. Georgia Just Stacked A Massive Baseball Day With A Football Break
Monday brought a rare kind of double take for Georgia fans, with the baseball program making the sort of national noise that usually defines an offseason and the football side quietly getting a favorable nod before fall practice even starts. The Bulldogs climbed to No. 1 in the Transfer Portal rankings after landing four commitments, a sign the roster reload is already taking shape after a busy day that also carried heavyweight recognition for the program.
The baseball news only sharpened the sense that Georgia is operating from a position of strength across sports, especially with the program adding another major individual honor to its recent run of success. On the football side, the Bulldogs also got a break in the scheduling conversation, as their SEC slate was not listed among the leagues toughest, giving them a little breathing room compared with teams such as Texas, Alabama and Oklahoma.
