Most first-year head coaches are eased in with a little mercy. Grayson did Greg Carswell no such favors.
His debut comes Wednesday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the Rams meet North Gwinnett at 8 p.m. in the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic. And that’s just the first hit.
After that, Grayson heads to Sandy Creek on Aug. 21, visits Langston Hughes on Sept. 4, plays Brunswick on Sept. 11 and then gets Buford on Sept. 18.
That opening run is a gauntlet by any standard. North Gwinnett is a serious first test, Hughes is described as a genuine 6A contender, and Buford comes in as SI’s No. 1 team in Georgia, the defending state champion and reigning High School on SI national champion after a 15-0 season.
Carswell steps into it with a decade of head-coaching experience, but this is still a sharp jump in pressure. He’s replacing Santavious Bryant, who left for Gainesville, at a program that has won plenty and expects to keep doing it. Four of Grayson’s last five head coaches won a state title, and last season the Rams went 12-1 while spending much of the year near the top of the national rankings.
There’s no rebuilding project here. Grayson is No. 2 in Georgia in High School on SI’s preseason Top 25, which means every early game carries weight before the calendar even settles in.
Carswell at least inherits a roster built to handle the heat. Quarterback Deuce Smith is back after throwing for 2,355 yards and 24 touchdowns. Four-star offensive lineman Jordan Agbanoma and four-star edge rusher Elijah Tillman give the Rams high-end talent on both sides of the ball, the kind that can make a brutal schedule look a little less daunting.
Grayson also made history by promoting Carswell from defensive coordinator in January, making him the first head coach in program history elevated from within the staff. He helped the Rams win the 2024 Class 6A title, and at his introductory press conference he said his vision for the program was one of “continuous growth and success.”
The basics are settled now. The press conference is long gone. The schedule has already decided what this first season is going to feel like.

Zayden Walkers path at Georgia has already shifted once, and it may keep moving in the same direction. The former five-star recruit arrived as an off-ball linebacker, then got moved to edge rusher late in the 2025 season and started flashing there with sacks in key games, a sign the Bulldogs may have found a quicker way to get his talent on the field.
Walkers spring was interrupted by shoulder surgery, but he is expected back for fall camp, which keeps his timeline on track even if his workload wont be rushed. Gunner Stockton Could Unlock Another Level For Georgias Offense
Mike Bobo thinks Gunner Stocktons next step for Georgia is less about what he can do with his legs and more about what hes willing to do when a play starts to break down. The Bulldogs have plenty of reason to trust Stockton as a runner, but Bobo pointed out that the offense could become more explosive if the quarterback is more aggressive throwing the ball down the field.
Last season, Stocktons hesitation to take those deep shots limited his passing impact, even as his mobility gave Georgia another dimension. If he can turn more of those broken plays into chances to attack vertically, it could add a new layer to the offense and help the Bulldogs chase the kind of consistency that matters most in a run toward another national title.
