Kemon Spell’s hold on Georgia may not be as firm as it looked when he first shut things down in February.
The five-star back from the 2027 class remains the No. 1 running back in his cycle and Georgia’s highest-ranked commit, but a new 247Sports update suggests another school is working hard to pull him away. That kind of behind-the-scenes push has popped up before, though this time the report points to Spell possibly having some interest as well - the first public sign of that since he pledged to Georgia on February 2.
“247Sports has gathered intel that a big player is in the mix behind the scenes,” Tom Loy wrote for 247Sports.com.
The full update is behind a subscription wall, but the wording alone signals that a major national program is involved. That matters because Spell has repeatedly said since committing that he wasn’t looking at other schools. This latest development is the first indication that might be changing.
NIL appears to be the most likely factor. When Spell committed to Georgia, he reportedly left some money on the table, though he is expected to make about $1 million next season in Athens.
He has said NIL was not a major priority for him, but the market around him has been aggressive. The nation’s No. 2 running back is making more from Tennessee, and schools like Miami, known for spending heavily, have also tried to flip him.
So far, Spell had shown no real interest in those programs. That no longer seems to be the case, even if the school involved in the new report hasn’t been named publicly.
Georgia still offers plenty of selling points. The Bulldogs send more players to the NFL than any other program, and recent running backs have made that jump too.
On the field, Georgia has won more than anyone else this decade, with two national championships and three SEC titles. It’s a hard standard for anyone to beat.
Still, after nearly eight months committed, NIL may be the pressure point that is making Spell pause.
If he does take a visit somewhere else this fall, it won’t stay quiet for long. In today’s social media world, a secret game-day trip would be tough to hide, and any public visit would immediately raise the stakes for Georgia. For now, that hasn’t happened - but the warning signs are there.
