No. 2 Georgia walked out of Tuscaloosa with a 20-17 win over No.
6 Alabama on Saturday night, and the result may be enough to push Kirby Smart’s team into the No. 1 spot after No. 1 Texas lost to Oklahoma.
But the final minutes were where the game really turned ugly for Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer.
Two late sequences - one involving a missed pass interference call in the end zone, the other a costly post-whistle penalty on freshman defensive back Dijon Lee - sparked a furious reaction from DeBoer and helped swing the finish toward Georgia.
The first flashpoint came on a play that should have put Alabama in a strong position to take the lead. Instead, early contact in the end zone went uncalled, and the Crimson Tide were forced into a third-and-long. That drive ended with a sack and knocked Alabama out of field-goal range.
DeBoer did not hide his anger. He stormed onto the field, threw his headset and screamed at the officials.
Then came the next Georgia possession, and the situation got worse for Alabama. Lee was flagged for a 15-yard penalty after the whistle, handing Georgia a first down and nearly sealing the game.
As Lee came off the field, DeBoer was seen screaming in his face and appeared to tell him that he had cost Alabama the game with the penalty.
The missed interference call was the bigger outrage. It was the kind of obvious mistake that changes a game in real time, not something that needed slow-motion review to spot.
The post-whistle penalty was a self-inflicted wound, but Alabama still would have needed to make a stop and then do something with the ball with time running down. That was no sure thing, especially after the Crimson Tide managed only three second-half points.

Georgias Win Was Just Overshadowed By An Ugly Alabama Tunnel Incident
Georgias 20-17 win over Alabama should have been remembered for what it meant on the field, with a strong rushing effort carrying the Bulldogs and Gunner Stockton adding to the offense through the air. Dwight Phillips Jr. and Bo Walker helped set the tone, giving Georgia enough balance to grind out a signature road-style victory in a game that stayed tight all the way through.
Instead, the postgame scene near the stadium tunnel drew the attention. Video captured an Alabama fan physically attacking Georgia linebacker Raylen Wilson, slapping and shoving his helmet in a confrontation reporter Reggie Chatman Jr. called unusual, and witnesses said the fan used a racially degrading term during the encounter. For a game that had already packed in plenty of tension, the final image was a reminder that the emotions spilled well beyond the final whistle. [Read more 🡒]
Kirby Smart Leak Puts Georgia's Biggest Win In A Different Light
Following Georgias win over Alabama, two videos purportedly showing Kirby Smart in pregame and postgame settings began circulating on social media, adding an unusual off-field wrinkle to one of the Bulldogs biggest victories. The clips appear to have been recorded secretly, include strong language and touch on what would normally be private team communication, which is part of why their appearance caught so many people by surprise.
Their authenticity has not been confirmed, but the fact that they surfaced at all gives the win a slightly different backdrop than the one Georgia expected. For a program that keeps so much of its internal business behind closed doors, the release of those videos is a reminder that even a landmark result can quickly be reframed by what leaks out afterward. DeBoer Still Saw One Frustrating Alabama Problem Against Georgia
Kalen DeBoers choice to keep the offense on the field late in the first half paid off for Alabama, as EJ Krowell punched in a 3-yard touchdown to send the Crimson Tide into halftime with a 14-10 lead over Georgia. It was the kind of aggressive decision that can swing a heavyweight game, and in the moment, it gave Alabama exactly the boost it wanted heading into the break.
Still, DeBoer left the first half with a familiar mix of satisfaction and frustration. The successful touchdown was balanced by missed chances that came down to execution, and quarterback Keelon Russell had his own issues dealing with Georgias blitz pressure. Alabama carried momentum into the second half, but the smaller breakdowns were hard to ignore in a game where every possession mattered. [Read more 🡒]
