Georgia’s quarterback picture is getting a little more interesting behind Gunner Stockton.
Stockton is locked in as the Bulldogs’ starter this season, but Georgia’s second fall scrimmage on Saturday may have opened up a real battle for the No. 2 job. Ryan Puglisi was the expected backup after serving in that role last year, but Ryan Montgomery reportedly turned in a strong performance and could be closing the gap.

Montgomery is heading into his second year in Athens. As a true freshman last season, he sat third on the depth chart, and that was supposed to be his spot again. But a big showing in the scrimmage appears to have made the decision a lot less straightforward for Kirby Smart.
The timing matters because neither Montgomery nor Puglisi has taken a meaningful snap for Georgia. For both players, these scrimmages are the best chance to make a case for why they should be Stockton’s backup. Right now, the answer isn’t clear, but Montgomery has made the conversation more complicated than many expected.
That kind of performance from Montgomery shouldn’t come out of nowhere. He also stood out in a fall scrimmage before the 2025 season, so this push may have been building for a while.
Georgia fans should get some clarity in about a week and a half, when the depth chart for the first game is released. For now, there’s at least a real possibility that Montgomery’s name will sit directly behind Stockton instead of Puglisi’s.
The more interesting long-term story may be what happens next offseason. If both players stay in Athens, Montgomery and Puglisi will be the leading candidates to replace Stockton as Georgia’s starter in 2027. Puglisi already had his shot against Stockton in the 2025 offseason and ended up as the backup last season, but Montgomery’s rise is changing how that future looks.
Still, the battle for QB2 this year matters because it could shape the starting race next year. Whoever wins the backup job now will have the strongest position heading into that competition.
Stockton remains the Bulldogs’ quarterback this season. That part isn’t in doubt. The question in Athens is who backs him up, and Montgomery has made that fight worth watching.
