Georgia Tech Schedule Change Sparks Outrage

Notre Dame's 2027 schedule just got more challenging with Virginia stepping in to replace Georgia Tech.

Notre Dame’s 2027 schedule took a turn this week, and the replacement for Georgia Tech is a much stiffer one.

Virginia will be the 12th opponent on the Fighting Irish’s pending 2027 slate, the Cavaliers announced Wednesday. The game will be played at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va., on a date that has not yet been set.

That matchup became necessary after Georgia Tech pulled out of its planned 2027 trip to South Bend earlier this month. The Yellow Jackets said they would no longer travel to Notre Dame that season because of ACC scheduling changes.

The conference adjustments are a big part of the backdrop here. Starting in 2027, 16 of the ACC’s 17 teams will play a nine-game league schedule, and all 17 schools will be required to face 10 Power 4 opponents.

Notre Dame had already lined up 12 games for 2027 before Georgia Tech backed away. The Irish still have a few open items to settle on that schedule, including when they’ll host BYU and the dates for road games at Virginia and Duke. As things stand, Notre Dame is set for six home games, five road games and one neutral-site game in Charlotte, N.C., against Wake Forest.

The Irish and Cavaliers don’t meet all that often, despite Notre Dame’s long-running scheduling relationship with the ACC. They have played five times, and Notre Dame has won every one.

The series began with the 1989 Kickoff Classic in East Rutherford, N.J., and continued with trips to Charlottesville in 2015 and 2021, plus home games in 2019 and 2024. Notre Dame won the most recent meeting, 35-14.

On paper, this is a tougher swap for Notre Dame than the Georgia Tech game it lost. Virginia finished 11-3 and led the ACC standings in the regular season last year.

This season, the Cavaliers are 3-1 and 1-0 in conference play. Georgia Tech, meanwhile, has appeared to slip after losing dual-threat quarterback Haynes King.

Georgia Fans Have A New Reason To Worry About Kemon Spell

Kemon Spell has been one of Georgias most important recruiting wins since he pledged to the Bulldogs in February, but the tug of war around elite prospects never really stops. A five-star running back, Spell has remained a priority for Georgia as the program works to lock in its future backfield, and his latest social media message was meant to steady the conversation by reaffirming his commitment.

Still, the backdrop is familiar for any fan following recruiting this closely: another school is pushing hard, and the interest is real enough to keep this from feeling settled. Recruiting experts keep warning that verbal pledges can shift before signing day, which is why Georgia supporters are being reminded to treat December as the real checkpoint - until Spell signs, there is always at least some room for another team to make a late move. Kirby Smart Just Landed In A Debate Georgia Fans Will Hate

Bud Elliotts latest take on the current college football order is sure to get plenty of Georgia fans fired up. On CBS Sports, the reporter argued that Kirby Smart is replaceable in todays NIL-driven landscape, pointing to the idea that roster building now matters so much that another coach could potentially spend more and still reach the same kind of success. He also noted that Georgia sits 19th among Power Four programs in roster value spending, which only adds another layer to the debate.

For Bulldogs supporters, the pushback is obvious because Smarts rsum in the NIL era is already hard to argue with. Since NIL became legal in 2021, Georgia has kept stacking SEC championships and has claimed two national titles under his watch, all while staying firmly in the sports upper tier. The question Elliott raised is less about what Georgia has done and more about whether, in a market driven by money as much as coaching, even a proven winner can be viewed as more interchangeable than the fan base wants to hear. Georgia Heads Into Vanderbilt With A Bigger Availability Concern Than Expected

Georgias injury picture got a little more crowded than usual heading into its trip to Vanderbilt, with six players showing up on the report and a split that leaves Kirby Smart having to manage both the absence of key bodies and the uncertainty around several others. The Bulldogs had three players ruled out and three listed as questionable, while Vanderbilt had its own issues, including availability questions around its starting center and quarterback.

For Georgia, the bigger concern is less about the number next to the injury report and more about what it means for depth on the practice field and in game planning. Smart has already pointed to the work of backup players this week, a reminder that the Bulldogs may need more than their usual rotation to absorb the load if the questionable group cannot answer the call before kickoff.
