Georgia had no shortage of standouts against Western Kentucky, but a few Bulldogs separated themselves in a big way.
On offense, Gunner Stockton kept doing what he’s done all season: making the job look easy. The senior quarterback from Tiger, Georgia was nearly perfect in his second outing of the year, hitting 13 of 16 throws for 234 yards and five touchdown passes.
Stockton has quickly turned into one of the most efficient quarterbacks in college football, and that kind of steadiness has a ripple effect across the entire unit. The offensive line, running backs and receivers all feed off that command, and the result is an offense that can pile up production in a hurry.
As the matchup gets tougher with SEC play ahead, Stockton has already done enough to give Georgia plenty of confidence.
The defensive nod goes to AJ Kruah, who made his presence felt all over the field. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound sophomore from Philadelphia brought speed and a violent edge to his tackling, finishing with five solo tackles and a forced fumble.
He was one of several Bulldogs who flashed on that side of the ball, but Kruah’s performance stood out because it showed exactly why the linebacker group may be Georgia’s strongest defensive position. He’s not waiting around to become a factor later; he already is one.
Then there was Tyriq Green, who delivered one of the most eye-catching outings of the day. The true freshman from Buford, Georgia showed off the kind of playmaking ability that jumps off the screen.
In a wild sequence after an interception and then a fumble, Green came up with a fumble recovery for a touchdown. He also broke a kickoff return 91 yards for a score, giving Georgia its first runback in almost 10 years.
With his speed and elusiveness, Green made it clear what kind of weapon he can be when the ball finds him. Expect to see more of him on special teams, where his ability should keep getting chances to shine.
