In the world of sports, some weeks are tougher than others, and this one was particularly challenging for Georgia basketball coach Mike White. His Bulldogs were handed a tough 102-77 loss by Saint Louis in the NCAA Tournament, a game that left fans and players alike in disbelief.
Georgia's performance was a stark contrast to their season-long efforts. At one point, they found themselves trailing by 40 points in the second half. Saint Louis capitalized on Georgia's slow start to the second half with an 18-0 run, effectively sealing the game.
Coach White didn't hold back in his post-game reflections. “Really disappointed in our effort, starting with myself,” he admitted.
“Did not see this coming. Tough way to end the season.”
Georgia guard Jeremiah Wilkinson, who put up an impressive 30 points with seven 3-pointers, was candid about the team's shortcomings. “We didn’t play hard at all,” he said.
“Turnovers, we’re not getting back... We were the bigger team today, so we have no excuse for that.”
Despite the sour ending, Georgia's season was nothing short of remarkable. Overcoming the loss of key players like Asa Newell to the NBA and Silas Demary Jr. to UConn, the Bulldogs rallied to achieve a program-record 22 regular-season wins. This marked their second NCAA Tournament appearance in four years, a feat last accomplished in 2001 and 2002.
Yet, the manner of their exit left a mark. “That’s not our standard,” White emphasized. “We’re in the NCAA Tournament... to jog back in transition defense is unacceptable.”
Looking ahead, Georgia faces roster uncertainties with the transfer portal looming. “So many of these student-athletes... might have a couple toes in the portal,” White noted, highlighting the complex dynamics of college basketball today.
White's message before the game was to play with joy, but the experience against Saint Louis was anything but joyful. “The next step is we gotta break through,” White said. “This one’s gonna be hard to... think about for a while.”
As Georgia looks to regroup, the focus will be on building resilience and preparing for the next opportunity. Coach White and the Bulldogs are eager to hit the court again, ready to put this tough lesson behind them and set their sights on future success.
