Georgia heads into Saturday’s matchup with Oklahoma carrying a couple of notable injury concerns for two of its top skill players.
Running back Nate Frazier and wide receiver Isiah Canion both exited Georgia’s win over Arkansas over the weekend, and both showed up on the SEC’s availability report as questionable for the Oklahoma game. Frazier’s status matters after a strong start to the season, with 202 rushing yards and five touchdowns through Georgia’s first three games.
If Frazier can’t go or is limited after taking a shot to the ribs against Arkansas, Georgia has options. Chauncey Bowens stepped in against the Razorbacks and scored three rushing touchdowns, while also serving as Georgia’s top pass-catching running back this season.
Kirby Smart pointed to the depth in that room, saying, “Interchangeable parts,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said of the Georgia running back room. “I mean, they all play, they all work, they all do the same practice habits.
So I love those guys. I like all our backs.”
The Bulldogs could also turn to Dwight Phillips and Bo Walker.
At receiver, Georgia used Thomas Blackshear heavily against Arkansas. The second-year wideout from Savannah led all Georgia receivers with 39 snaps, though he was targeted three times and didn’t make a catch.
Another name to watch is second-year receiver Talyn Taylor, the only Georgia receiver with multiple touchdowns so far this season. Smart praised his progress, saying, “He’s done a great job,” Smart said of Taylor.
“He’s improved on his physicality and blocking. That’s always a big asset for him.
But he runs good routes. I think he’s gotta continue to get better and improve, but it’s on little things that he continues to grow and get more confidence in.”
Georgia’s injury list also included defensive back Tyriq Green, outside linebacker Chase Linton and offensive lineman Marcus Harrison as out. All three had already missed the Arkansas game.
Oklahoma had a question mark of its own, with star defensive tackle David Stone listed as questionable after a knee injury in practice on Monday.
The game is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday and will air on ESPN. The SEC will release additional availability reports on Thursday, Friday and 90 minutes before kickoff on Saturday.
