Georgia’s push for four-star defensive back Seth Williams is coming down to the wire, and the biggest problem for Kirby Smart is that nobody seems to know which way this one is leaning.
Williams is set to announce his decision on July 31, with Georgia and Clemson still standing as the two finalists. That has been the case for a while, but the longer this recruitment drags on, the less certain it feels. Both programs believe they have a real shot, which means one of them is about to take a hit.
For Georgia, there’s reason to believe the door is still open. Williams had originally planned to commit at the beginning of July, and Clemson looked like the clear favorite as that date got closer.
Then he pushed the decision back, and that delay gave Georgia fresh life in the race. It also made all of the earlier predictions in Clemson’s favor look a lot less useful.
At this point, Georgia can’t afford to let this one slip. The Bulldogs currently sit at No. 12 in the country in the recruiting rankings, and Williams would give that class a needed bump. His commitment would move Georgia up to No. 11, putting them just one more pledge away from getting back into the top 10.
But the ranking boost is only part of the story. Georgia has just one defensive back committed in its 2027 class right now, and that lone pledge came from Adryan Cole two weeks ago after he picked the Bulldogs over LSU, Florida and Ole Miss. That means Williams would fill a much bigger need than just another name on the board.
Smart is also working against the calendar. A lot of the elite players in the 2027 class are already off the board, so Georgia either needs to land Williams or start pulling commits away from other schools. Realistically, it probably needs to do both.
For now, though, everything comes back to Williams. On Friday, July 31, he’ll choose between Georgia and Clemson, and one of those programs is going to walk away disappointed.
