Georgia Just Sent A Clear Playoff Message After Beating Florida

Despite their dominant win against Florida, the Georgia Bulldogs find themselves just shy of the top spot in the latest AP Top 25 rankings, trailing Miami's commanding lead.

Georgia’s climb to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 came on the strength of a defense that kept tightening the screws on Florida all afternoon.

The Bulldogs moved up behind Miami in Sunday’s Week 9 update, with the Hurricanes holding the top spot on 62 first-place votes. Georgia got seven, while Utah picked up one.

The Bulldogs are now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play after their 27-8 win over No. 17 Florida at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday.

That result also kept Georgia right where it wanted to be in the national conversation after a clean rebound from its first loss of the season. The Bulldogs jumped on Florida early, built a 24-0 halftime lead and never let the Gators find any rhythm. It was the first time the rivalry was played in Atlanta, and Georgia turned it into a one-sided night by forcing four turnovers and winning its sixth straight in the series.

The scoring started on the ground. Nate Frazier and Bo Walker each punched in 1-yard runs, and Georgia’s defense kept stacking stops behind them. Ellis Robinson IV and Demello Jones both intercepted Aaron Philo, and after the second pick Florida turned to Tramell Jones Jr. at quarterback.

The biggest swing came with 29 seconds left in the first half. Quintavius Johnson strip-sacked Jones, Chris Cole scooped it up and raced 66 yards for a touchdown, and Georgia went into halftime with complete control.

Florida finally got on the board in the fourth quarter after a Talyn Taylor fumble, but the Gators never made it truly interesting. Braylon Conley later intercepted a pass in the end zone to shut down another Florida chance.

Gunner Stockton did not need to do much through the air, but he was steady enough to keep Georgia moving. He finished 13 of 23 for 101 yards without an interception and added 45 rushing yards on 12 carries, two weeks after three turnovers against Auburn.

Georgia also owned the line of scrimmage on the ground, outrushing Florida 217-48. Cole led the Bulldogs with nine tackles and a sack.

Kirby Smart praised the atmosphere, the work his team put in during the off week and the way Georgia handled the game plan.

"I appreciate our fan base and really the atmosphere that was created today," Kirby Smart said after the win. "We have an awesome atmosphere, a great theme to play in.

You know, next year, I guess we'll be playing in a no spot, but this one's good because it's been good to us in terms of the atmosphere created. I did think that both fan bases had a great turnout.

"I'm proud of the way our guys played, fought. You know, we left a lot out there that we desired.

Think we can play obviously a lot better offensively. But we did what we had to do, and we avoided turnovers for the most part and we got turnovers.

The Dawgs didn't beat the Dawgs today. The Gators helped us with some of the turnovers they had.

"But really proud of the way our guys worked during the off week. I thought we had a really good off week, a good week of planning.

And then to execute the plan during the week, it paid off for us. But overall, a lot of credit goes to the players for their work ethic and the coaching staff did a great job of their game plans."

The rest of the SEC also made a strong showing in the new rankings. Kentucky is No.

8, Alabama No. 9, Texas No.

10, Ole Miss No. 12, LSU No.

15, Tennessee No. 16, Missouri No.

19, South Carolina No. 23 and Florida No. 25.

That gives the league four teams in the top 10 and 10 in the top 25.

Georgia Now Has A Bigger Concern Than Beating Florida

Ellis Robinson IV gave Georgia plenty to feel good about before the injury scare in Jacksonville, picking off a pass and adding tackles in the rivalry game against Florida before leaving in the third quarter with a lower-leg issue. Kirby Smart said Robinsons knee tightened up, and at the time there was no confirmed structural damage, but the cornerback did not return, leaving the Bulldogs to sort through both the result of the game and a developing concern in the secondary.

For a defense that has leaned on Robinsons playmaking, the bigger question now is how quickly Georgia can get clarity on his status for the stretch ahead. His availability for upcoming games is uncertain, and for a team with bigger goals than one rivalry win, any lingering issue with a key defensive back is the kind of problem that can ripple beyond a single afternoon. Gunner Stockton Made One Thing Clear After Georgia Beat Florida

Gunner Stockton came away from Georgias win over Florida with the kind of measured postgame tone that usually plays well in a locker room. He praised the defense for setting the standard, acknowledged that the offense had its rough patches, and pointed to the atmosphere around the rivalry game as part of what made the day feel bigger than a normal Saturday. Even in victory, Stockton kept the focus on the details, including specific plays and the work of his teammates.

For Georgia, that mindset matters as much as the result itself. The Bulldogs got the win they wanted, but Stockton made clear there is still room to clean things up and keep pushing forward, which is often the message that carries most weight in November. A rivalry victory can cover up a lot for a week, but his comments suggested the goal inside the building is to treat it as a checkpoint, not a finish line. [Read more 🡒]

Eric Singleton Just Gave Georgia Fans One More Reason To Remember Him

Eric Singleton has spent plenty of time on the wrong side of Georgia, and not just once. The wide receiver has taken four losses to the Bulldogs while suiting up for three different rivals, first at Georgia Tech, then Auburn and Florida, which already made him a familiar name around these parts before his latest comments added another layer to the story.

During a recent press conference, Singleton made a remark about Georgia that drew attention quickly enough for Florida to remove it from the official transcript. It has only added to the intrigue around his future, too, with speculation growing about whether he could get an extra year of eligibility and what that might mean if he ends up looking for another transfer landing spot.
