Georgia was set up for its first real chance at a ranked win, and the Week 3 AP Poll took that off the board.
Oklahoma entered the season as the No. 10 team in the country and was supposed to be the Bulldogs’ first big test. Instead, after three weeks, the Sooners are out of the AP Poll, which means Georgia will not get the ranked matchup it expected this weekend.
That slide happened fast. Oklahoma opened with a 51-0 win over UTEP, then dropped a 17-10 game to Michigan. Last weekend, the Sooners escaped New Mexico 14-6, and even with a win this week, the AP Poll still pushed them out of the top 25.
Georgia, meanwhile, stayed at No. 2, which is the part that really matters inside the program. But the missing ranked opponent changes the look of the résumé a bit. A win over Oklahoma still counts, of course, but it won’t carry the same shine if the Sooners aren’t ranked when Georgia beats them.
The Bulldogs still have chances ahead. The SEC schedule usually hands out plenty of ranked opportunities, and Georgia’s next major one should come in two weeks against Alabama, which is No. 8 this week.
After that, Georgia still has three other opponents sitting in the poll right now: No. 21 Florida, No.
4 Ole Miss and No. 19 Missouri.
Of course, that picture can change quickly. Teams can climb into the AP Poll before Georgia plays them, and others can fall out just as fast. For Georgia, the simple formula is the same: keep winning, and the résumé will take care of itself.
