The Week 3 AP Poll gave Georgia exactly what it didn’t get on the field: a path, however temporary, to keep chasing No. 1. The Bulldogs stayed at No. 2 for a second straight week after rolling past Western Kentucky 70-20, while Texas jumped to the top spot after Ohio State fell to the Longhorns on Saturday night.
That result left Georgia right where it was, even though a move to No. 1 was on the table. Instead, AP voters rewarded Texas for the win that changed the rankings in the first place. For Georgia, the immediate takeaway isn’t the number next to its name so much as the extra fuel that came with it.
There’s a case to be made that the Bulldogs belonged at the top. Texas owns the stronger signature win, no question, but Georgia has done what it was supposed to do through two games, winning by 50 and 60 points. The competition hasn’t been stiff yet, but the Bulldogs have still handled business in emphatic fashion.
Still, the AP’s choice makes sense. Texas has shown more so far because it beat Ohio State, and that’s the kind of result that carries real weight in an early-season poll. Georgia may not love it, but it now has a fresh reason to keep pressing.
And the schedule is about to give it chances. Georgia opens SEC play this week with its first road trip of the season, heading to Arkansas. That won’t be the kind of measuring-stick game Texas just played, but the tests are coming soon enough.
No. 24 Oklahoma visits Athens in Week 4, then Georgia goes to No.
10 Alabama two weeks later. Three games after that, the Bulldogs travel to No.
8 Ole Miss, and No. 20 Missouri is also on the schedule later in the year.
If Georgia keeps winning through all of that, the case for No. 1 gets a lot stronger. Texas probably has to lose before Georgia can move ahead, but if both teams stay perfect, the SEC Championship game could settle it.
Texas still has six ranked opponents left on its schedule - Tennessee, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Missouri, LSU and Texas A&M - and it’s hard to imagine it getting through all of them unscathed. Until then, Georgia just has to keep stacking wins and wait for the rankings to catch up.
