Kevin Hartsfield’s first stop of the season wound up being a major one for Georgia.
The nation’s No. 1 running back in the 2028 class was in Athens on September 5, 2026, for Georgia’s season-opening win over Tennessee State, even with more than 100 recruits on campus. Somehow, Hartsfield slipped through the cracks at first, but once he was spotted at Sanford Stadium, the visit became one of the biggest storylines of the day.
Hartsfield’s appearance carried extra weight because Georgia has been trending strongly in his recruitment for months. That feeling only grew when he chose Athens for the first full weekend of college football. A few weeks earlier, Hartsfield said it would be tough for him to say no to Georgia, a comment that spoke volumes about where the Bulldogs stood.
The visit also mattered because it came before any of the other schools he is expected to see during the season. If Georgia landed the first trip, that at least suggests the Bulldogs are near the top of the list - and maybe sitting in front right now.
Georgia’s 2027 running back commit Kemon Spell adds another layer to the picture. Spell is the No. 1 running back in his class, and in a lot of cases that kind of commitment can push other elite backs toward different schools. Hartsfield, though, does not appear bothered by that at all.
Spell has not said anything publicly about Hartsfield, but the impression he has given is that he is coming to Georgia to win championships and not worrying about individual awards. If that holds, there’s a real path for Spell to help recruit Hartsfield too. The idea of pairing the two would give Georgia what could be the best one-two punch at running back in the country.
Spell is a year older than Hartsfield and would arrive at Georgia next spring if he signs with the Bulldogs in December. If he can help bring Hartsfield along, Georgia’s backfield could be in place for years.
