Ohio State’s ugly Sunday got a little uglier when Georgia kept pressing on five-star commit David Jacobs.
The Buckeyes’ loss to Texas is the obvious reason their fan base woke up miserable. Ohio State had the Longhorns in a tight spot, leading 23-3 in the fourth quarter before Texas ripped off the comeback and stole it by one. That kind of collapse sticks with you, and it’s the kind of defeat Ohio State will feel like it let get away.
But Georgia’s push for Jacobs is another wrinkle Ohio State would rather not deal with.
Jacobs, the No. 1 player in Georgia and the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2027 class, has been a major Georgia target for his entire recruitment. He committed to Ohio State last December, and since then the two sides had not been publicly connected - until Saturday, when Jacobs visited Athens with his younger brother during Georgia’s 50-point win over Western Kentucky.
Whether Georgia has a real shot to flip him remains unclear. Still, the visit matters. For Kirby Smart and Georgia, this has the feel of the kind of recruiting swing that can change the conversation in a cycle.
Ohio State likely has the stronger NIL pitch, and that could be the edge that keeps Jacobs in Columbus. Georgia may have to work around that, though Jacobs already knows what the Bulldogs are bringing to the table. It’s also possible Georgia has pushed its offer closer to Ohio State’s level, or that Jacobs is simply rethinking things and weighing the appeal of staying close to home.
Either way, Georgia clearly still has his attention.
That matters for a Bulldogs program sitting at No. 9 in the country in the current recruiting rankings. It’s not a bad spot, but it’s not where Georgia wants to be. Even if landing Jacobs would only move the Bulldogs up to No. 8, the bigger impact could be how much momentum a player of his caliber creates around the class.
Georgia now has about three months to keep working on him. Nobody should be rushing to pencil in a flip, but in recruiting, especially when Kirby Smart is chasing an in-state star, nothing is off the table.
