Georgia’s path through the rest of the season has a few eye-catching numbers attached to it, and ESPN’s confidence in the Bulldogs is running high.
The biggest one might be the road trip to Ole Miss later this season. That game carries real weight for Georgia, not just because it would be a chance to avenge last year’s playoff loss, but because the Rebels have built what looks like the strongest resume in the SEC so far. Still, ESPN’s current outlook gives Georgia a 70 percent chance to go into Oxford and leave with a win.
That projection stands out because Ole Miss has done more on the field through three games. The Rebels already own a win over LSU from this past weekend, and they opened the season with a victory over Louisville, which is currently ranked No. 16 in the country. Georgia, meanwhile, is 3-0 with three lopsided wins, but it has not faced a true opponent yet.
The Bulldogs do have chances to sharpen their résumé before that Ole Miss matchup arrives. This weekend brings Oklahoma, and the stretch after that includes Alabama, Auburn and Florida before Georgia sees the Rebels.
Even with that upcoming gauntlet, ESPN still sees Georgia as a team that should keep rolling. According to ESPN FPI, the Bulldogs are projected to finish 12-0 after improving to 3-0 on the season. Their win probabilities shifted after Week Three, and the model continues to treat Georgia like a heavy favorite in most of its remaining games.
In fact, ESPN gives Georgia at least an 80 percent chance to win seven of its last nine games. That includes an 83 percent chance against Oklahoma this weekend, even with the Sooners carrying one of the top defenses in the country.
The toughest assignment on Georgia’s schedule, at least in ESPN’s view, is Alabama. Even there, the Bulldogs are still given a 58 percent chance to win on the road. That number was close to 50/50 two weeks ago, but Georgia’s two recent blowout victories have pushed the odds in its favor.
If Georgia handles the seven games where it is heavily favored, the Bulldogs should be in strong shape for the College Football Playoff. Beat Alabama or Ole Miss, and the path to the SEC Championship gets even clearer. Run the table at 12-0, and Georgia could enter that title game as the No. 1 team in the country.
