Welcome to Tuesday, Bulldog fans. The paycheck games are done, the alternate uniforms have already been rolled out to impress the recruits, and, hopefully, the worst weather of the season is behind us. Now it’s time to shift into conference play.
Kirby Smart met with the media Monday afternoon and, as usual, he kept things pretty steady. He’ll say a few good things about the previous game, then quickly pivot to the next opponent and praise that team, too.
He also managed one of his familiar early-session lines when a reporter asked a question: “I don’t even know what you’re talking about”. Don’t worry, you didn’t miss much.
There aren’t any major injuries that we know about, and the official injury report doesn’t come out until Wednesday night.
The line of the day came when Smart was asked about Gunner Stockton’s experience now compared to his first season starting last year. Smart’s answer was short and blunt: “It’s more valuable than not.”
After a game where Georgia scored 70 points, did damage in all three phases, and had its starting quarterback come out halfway through the first quarter, it’s not exactly hard to hand out strong grades. I used to enjoy the position grades from the Red & Black after the weekend games, but that feature seems to be gone now, so I went looking elsewhere. Dawgnation had one, and it fit the bill.
I also spent a little time digging through Arkansas coverage, and there wasn’t much easy to find. One site, razorbackers.com, immediately caught my attention with a headline that read: “ Lane Kiffin and LSU embarrass former Arkansas head coach in dominant season opener ”.
Yes, that was on an Arkansas site. From there it only got better, with gems like “ The most hated Arkansas Razorback coaches of all time, Ranked ”.
That’s a serious fan base, and you have to respect the commitment.
Back on the Georgia side, we now know when the Oklahoma game will kick off and who will carry it. The Sooners will come to Athens in two weeks, with ABC/ESPN televising the game at 3:30 pm ET. Even though Oklahoma looked rough against Michigan, the defense is still pretty legit, and Georgia may not get a true SEC-level measuring stick until then.
Elsewhere in the college football world, Florida State fired its athletic director. The same guy who delivered the biggest jump in athletic department revenue is now out, even if he also left the department with its biggest fiscal debt.
That has to be an uneasy development for Mike Norvell, who is headed to Tuscaloosa this weekend. Did we break FSU?
