Zykie Helton has been one of the loudest offseason stories at Georgia, and the buzz keeps getting stronger. The former three-star offensive lineman got to campus in the spring, jumped in with the first team right away and has continued to stand out enough in camp that coaches are now talking about him as a possible option on the defensive line this season, too.
That kind of two-way workload would be unusual for any player. For a true freshman, it borders on eye-catching. But Helton is apparently pushing for something most people probably never expected to hear about when he first arrived in Athens.

The bigger immediate development is that Helton may already have a starting job on Georgia’s offensive line. That could still shift before the season opens, but based on the current camp picture, he would likely be in the starting five if things began today.
Georgia has not exactly shied away from starting freshmen up front. Juan Gaston did it last year in the Bulldogs’ first game of the season. The difference, of course, is that Gaston came in as a five-star recruit while Helton was rated a three-star.
Once a player gets on campus, though, the label matters a lot less than what he can actually do. Kirby Smart has shown plenty of times that he’ll put the best player on the field, no matter where that player sat in the recruiting rankings.
Helton’s rise also offers a useful reminder for anyone sweating Georgia’s 2027 class. The Bulldogs currently hold the No. 9 class in the country, but 12 of their 20 commits are three-stars. Helton’s camp performance is a pretty clear example of why the stars alone don’t tell the whole story.
Smart has built his program by trusting his evaluations and going after players he believes can help Georgia win, regardless of whether they’re five-stars, three-stars or unranked. Fans may get caught up in recruiting-site grades, but Smart’s track record is the reason Georgia keeps loading up on talent.
That track record includes four SEC titles and two national championships, along with sending more players to the NFL than anyone else over the past few years. Some of those pros once came in as three-star recruits, too.
Helton is still waiting to prove it in a game, since he has not played one for Georgia yet. But everything coming out of fall camp suggests he is trending toward being a special player. Whether he actually ends up lining up on both sides of the ball remains to be seen, but a three-star freshman pushing for a Week 1 starting spot on Georgia’s offensive line says plenty about how Smart evaluates talent.

Kevin Hartsfield has already made it clear that Georgia is going to stay near the top of his list. The No. 1 running back in the 2028 recruiting class has been heavily courted by several of the countrys biggest programs, but his public lean has been hard to miss, from the Georgia gear he keeps wearing to his acknowledgment that turning down the Bulldogs would not be easy.
For Georgia, that kind of early momentum matters, even if it is still well ahead of the finish line. Hartsfield has not committed anywhere, and other major programs are still pushing hard, so the Bulldogs advantage is real but far from final. For now, though, Georgia appears to be the team with the clearest edge in a race that should only get more interesting from here. [Read more 🡒]
Georgias Passing Game Faces A Huge Test In The Next Two Scrimmages
Georgias offense is heading into a revealing stretch after losing a lot of production at receiver this offseason, and the biggest void is easy to see with Zachariah Branch gone after setting the schools single-season receptions record. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has spent the early part of camp trying to sort out who can become dependable targets in a passing game that will need the ball spread around more effectively than ever.
The next two scrimmages should give Georgia a better sense of which names are ready to move from promising to essential. London Humphreys, Talyn Taylor, CJ Wiley, Jaden Reddell, Elyiss Williams and freshman Tre Shields are all in the mix, and the Bulldogs are looking for someone to separate from that group before the season starts to take shape.
