Dabo Swinney didn’t dance around the subject Tuesday when asked about Clemson and Georgia scrapping their future home-and-home series.
The Clemson coach was blunt about the reported decision to drop the four games that had been set for 2029, 2030, 2032 and 2033. Under the reported plan, Georgia would have hosted in 2030 and 2032, while Clemson would have been the home team in 2029 and 2033.
According to a Monday night report from the Athens Banner-Herald, the two programs mutually agreed to cancel the series as the SEC and ACC move to a 9-game conference schedule.
Swinney made clear he doesn’t like losing a matchup like that from the calendar.
“I hate it, because I just think it’s great for fans, and I get it. We’ve been playing 10 forever around here, but going to 9 conference games, a lot of these leagues are going.
I wish it was less. I wish everybody played 7 conference games, and then you had more crossover games all throughout college football, but it is what it is,” Dabo Swinney said.
His point was simple: he wants fewer conference games and more of the kind of nonconference meetings that put marquee programs from different leagues on the same field.
There is still a chance Clemson and Georgia could line up neutral-site games down the road rather than revive the same home-and-home setup, but for now the reported series is off the board.
And while those future dates are in flux, both teams are already dealing with the 2026 season in the present, with each trying to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff.
