Georgia’s coaching staff keeps feeding the head-coaching market, and now another Bulldog assistant has surfaced in the mix.
After NC State fired Dave Doeren on Saturday, ESPN put together a list of candidates who could draw real attention for the opening, and Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann was among the names mentioned.
ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Max Olson and Eli Lederman wrote this about Schumann:
Kirby Smart’s longtime protégé seems ready to lead his own program, and would not leave a great situation at Georgia for just any opportunity. Schumann was a serious candidate for the vacancy at nearby North Carolina in 2024 before Bill Belichick emerged.
Schumann is just 36 but has been with Smart for the past decade at Georgia, after six years as a student assistant/graduate assistant for Nick Saban at Alabama. Schumann grew up in Georgia and attended high school in Texas.
Schumann has been affiliated with six national championship teams.
Schumann has been in Athens since 2016, when he joined Georgia as the inside linebackers coach. He moved up to co-defensive coordinator in 2019 and took over as defensive coordinator in 2023.
The NC State search is only getting started, and it figures to be one of several jobs that will open over the next couple of months as the coaching carousel heats up.
For now, Schumann remains focused on helping Georgia push back toward the College Football Playoff. Still, his name is now in the conversation, and it may only be a matter of time before he gets his first head-coaching job.

Georgia Bye Week Comes At A Huge Time In The SEC Race
Week 8 brings a little breathing room at just the right moment for Georgia, which enters the weekend tied with Kentucky for first place in the SEC standings. The Bulldogs get their bye week on Oct. 24, a pause that comes amid a conference slate filled with meaningful games and a race that has started to tighten up around the top of the league.
Kirby Smart has already pointed to the way college footballs balance has shifted, noting the growing parity tied to talent distribution and player compensation. Georgias next test comes Oct. 31 against Florida at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and by then the standings could look different, making this open date feel especially valuable for a team trying to stay ahead in a crowded SEC chase. Georgia Could Face A Surprising Playoff Rest Debate Soon
Georgias bye week has brought a different kind of calculus to Athens, with the Bulldogs sitting No. 5 in the AP Poll and still very much in the thick of the College Football Playoff picture. If they take care of the rest of the regular season and then win the SEC Championship, they could position themselves for a first-round playoff bye, the sort of reward teams have spent all year chasing.
But there is another layer to the conversation that is a little less intuitive. If Georgia misses out on the SEC title game, it would instead get a bye during conference championship weekend, and some historical data suggests that path may actually be more beneficial than the cleaner-looking first-round break. It is the kind of wrinkle that gives the Bulldogs something to monitor as the bracket picture sharpens. [Read more 🡒]
Georgia Fans Have An Unusual SEC Game To Watch This Weekend
With the SEC race tightening, Georgia fans have more than their own schedule to keep an eye on this weekend. The Bulldogs are one of four conference teams with one loss, and the path to the SEC Championship game now runs as much through scoreboard watching as it does through Athens, with Kentucky, Tennessee and Ole Miss all in the mix.
One result in particular could shape Georgias standing, as Tennessee heads into a tricky matchup with South Carolina. The added wrinkle for Bulldogs fans is that Georgia and Tennessee are not meeting this season, ending a long stretch of annual games that began back in 1992, so this is one of those rare fall weekends when a longtime SEC rival matters without ever lining up across from the Bulldogs themselves.
