Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann looks like a future head coach, and North Carolina may have just reminded everyone how quickly those opportunities can turn. Schumann was a serious candidate for the UNC opening two years ago before the job ultimately went to Bill Belichick, and with the scandal surrounding the program over the past two days, Georgia fans can probably feel even better about how that played out.
The Tar Heels put their football GM on administrative leave Monday, a move that arrived without explanation. Then Tuesday brought another jolt: North Carolina is being investigated by the College Sports Commission, the group that enforces compliance rules tied to NIL deals across college athletics. If that investigation points to violations, it means the program could be in real trouble.
It also raises the obvious what-if around Schumann. Had he taken the UNC job, the staff and structure there might have looked completely different under him than they do under Belichick.
The people now under scrutiny might never have been in those roles at all. Or maybe the same mess still would have found its way to Chapel Hill.
Either way, Schumann ended up avoiding a situation that has suddenly turned ugly.
Back in Athens, Schumann has built a strong reputation as Georgia’s defensive coordinator. His unit has been very solid, and he’s become one of the assistants Bulldogs fans would most like to keep around. But that kind of stability usually has an expiration date at a place like Georgia.
Schumann has been on Kirby Smart’s staff since Smart arrived in 2016, and he climbed quickly to defensive coordinator. That’s about as far as he can go in Athens. If he wants the next step in his career, it will have to come as a head coach somewhere else.
Smart gave him a contract extension through the 2028 season a few months ago, but even that may not keep him in Athens that long. If the right program wants him badly enough, it could be willing to cover any buyout and make him its head coach.
UNC was not the only school to take a serious look. Florida also gave Schumann a hard look this offseason. He still hasn’t landed the right job, but with Power Four programs already circling, that kind of attention figures to keep coming until he finally makes the jump.
