Georgia Faces One Pressure Point Kirby Smart Must Fix Fast

As the Georgia Bulldogs gear up for their 2026 face-off against the Florida Gators, Coach Smart and key players are honing their strategies to overcome past setbacks and secure a decisive victory.

Georgia heads into Atlanta with plenty to sort out after one of the biggest shocks of Kirby Smart’s career, but there’s no luxury of dwelling on it. The bye week is gone, the rivalry with Florida is here, and with the Gators rolling in, the Bulldogs need a response fast. Smart has not dropped back-to-back games since the 2018 SEC Championship and the Sugar Bowl loss to Texas that followed, and with the country on upset alert, Georgia is expected to look ready from the opening snap.

A big part of that answer starts with London Humphreys. In his third and final season in Athens, the No. 16 receiver has steadily carved out a larger role as a dependable target for Gunner Stockton.

His 10.63-second 100-meter speed gives Georgia a legitimate vertical threat, someone who can instantly ease pressure and stretch a defense. He has scored a touchdown in each of his last two games, and he enters this matchup with a real chance to find the end zone again.

The Bulldogs’ path against Florida also runs through the tight ends, especially if Georgia wants to get the run game back on track after struggling to move the ball on the ground against Auburn. Jaden Reddell, wearing No. 23, will be asked to do the dirty work in the trenches, whether Georgia leans on one-tight-end looks, two-tight-end packages, or even three-tight-end sets. His blocking on the edge could be the difference for a banged-up backfield that needs space to operate.

Elyiss Williams, also No. 23, brings a different kind of threat. Like Reddell, he has a role in helping the run game function, but Georgia has also seen him grow into a pass-catching weapon thanks to his frame and reach. In a game that could come down to fine margins, Williams’ ability to win a contested ball may matter most when the Bulldogs get down near the goal line.

Defensively, Khalil Barnes has to help set the tone early. The senior safety from Athens has 17 tackles this season and has made his presence felt in coverage, against the run, and with the kind of hits that can change the mood of a game. With Florida potentially turning to Aaron Philo or Tramell Jones Jr. at quarterback, Barnes’ job is to make the Gators think twice about pushing the ball deep and force them into a more limited attack.

That becomes even more important because of what Florida can do on the ground with Jaden Baugh. He has already rushed for more than 750 yards and 13 touchdowns, making him one of the country’s most dangerous backs.

Georgia’s front, though, has the kind of answer the Bulldogs are built around. Elijah Griffin, No. 90, has 10 tackles and a sack this season and will be counted on to help shut down the run, even if that means eating double teams so Raylen Wilson and Chris Cole Jr. can flow freely behind him.

Jordan Hall is another key piece in that battle up front. The No. 44 defensive tackle has 11 tackles on the season and has done it while drawing plenty of extra attention.

His job is to clog the middle, wreck timing, and force runners to bounce wide or get met in the backfield. Against a Florida offense with a big-time back, that kind of disruption could be decisive.

Georgias Auburn Loss Suddenly Looks Even More Costly

Auburns upset of No. 1 Georgia looked like one of the seasons biggest results two weeks ago, but the Tigers have since taken hard losses to LSU and Ole Miss, which has changed the way that defeat is being viewed around the SEC. What once felt like a jolt to the national title picture now reads a little differently, with the Bulldogs left to wonder whether a rough afternoon in Auburn was as much about timing and fortune as it was about anything deeper.

For Georgia, the larger issue is what the loss does to the road ahead. The Bulldogs path to the SEC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff is still alive, but it has become less forgiving, and the next stretch matters even more now. Florida looms as a critical test, the kind of game that could shape whether Georgia stays on course or has to fight through a far narrower postseason lane. [Read more 🡒]

Georgia Gets A Huge Rivalry Boost For Florida Showdown

Talyn Taylor is set to give Georgia another weapon for one of the seasons most familiar pressure points, and the timing could not be better. The wide receiver will be available against Florida for the first time after missing last years rivalry game because of injury, adding a fresh layer to a matchup that already carries plenty of weight for the Bulldogs.

This years meeting also comes with a different backdrop, with the game shifting to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and both teams ranked for the first time in the series since 2002. ABC will carry the broadcast, with streaming options available as well, but for Georgia the bigger storyline is simple: a key playmaker finally gets his first crack at a rivalry stage he had to watch from the sideline a year ago. Georgia Now Has A Bigger Concern Than Beating Florida

Georgias win over Florida came with a fresh concern on the defensive side, as cornerback Ellis Robinson IV went down in the third quarter and did not return. Before leaving, he had already made his presence felt with an interception and tackles, a reminder of how important he has become in the secondary as Georgia tries to keep its momentum rolling through the stretch run.

Kirby Smart said Robinsons knee tightened up, and there was no confirmed structural damage at the time of the report, but the bigger issue now is his status going forward. For a defense that leans on depth and versatility in the back end, the uncertainty around Robinsons availability is the kind of development that can linger well beyond a rivalry game. [Read more 🡒]
