Georgia Faces One Florida Problem Kirby Smart Still Cant Solve

With the rivalry moving to a new venue, Florida's quarterback conundrum adds an intriguing twist to their upcoming showdown with Georgia.

ATHENS - Georgia has been here before, waiting on Florida’s quarterback situation to sort itself out and trying to plan for a player it knows well.

This time, the mystery centers on Aaron Philo.

Philo, the local product who broke state passing records at Prince Avenue Christian School, was a name Georgia had to prepare for back in the 2024 season when he was at Georgia Tech. He ultimately didn’t play in that matchup, and the Yellow Jackets came close to springing the upset before Georgia survived with a 44-42 eight-overtime win.

Now Philo is with Florida, having followed offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Atlanta to Gainesville. He opened the season as the Gators’ starter and held that job for the first six games, throwing nine touchdown passes against three interceptions while also scoring three rushing touchdowns.

But Florida may have to make another adjustment this week. Philo missed the Gators’ most recent game, a 27-24 upset of Texas, because of a shoulder injury. Tramell Jones stepped in and gave Florida a lift in his first collegiate start, throwing for 150 yards and two touchdowns while adding 41 rushing yards on 10 carries.

That performance has only added to the uncertainty around who Georgia will face on Saturday.

Florida coach Ryan Sumrall did not name a starter when he met with the media Monday morning. He also said Jones took some bumps and bruises in that win over Texas, which came after Philo first suffered the shoulder injury against South Carolina.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart isn’t treating the situation like it changes much.

“Both very talented,” Smart said. “One beat Ole handily.

One beat Texas on the road. They’re both completely capable good players.

Known about both of them for a long time. In terms of their ability, they’re both plenty capable, especially in Buster’s offense.”

Sumrall echoed that the Gators’ offense would not shift much depending on who gets the nod.

“The offense doesn’t change really with one or the other. I mean, Tramell, Philo both have similar skillsets,” Sumrall said.

“One may do one thing a little better, one may do the other thing a little bit better. It’s not like they’re drastically different players where you’re playing with a true run-threat quarterback that can’t throw it, and then you have another guy that’s a pocket passer that can’t run.

They’re both skill sets that have more similarities and differences.”

Georgia’s defense has also had to deal with mobile quarterbacks lately. Auburn’s Byrum Brown ran for 115 yards and a touchdown against the Bulldogs in Auburn’s 27-24 upset win in Athens. Florida, meanwhile, scored 44 points with Philo at quarterback in its win over Auburn earlier this season.

Both teams were off last week, giving each side extra time to heal. That could help Philo recover further from the shoulder issue, and it also leaves open the possibility of Georgia getting safety KJ Bolden back after he missed the loss to Auburn.

“We had good practices all week last week, and then leading into this week, we’ll find out more about where they are today and through the injury report information we have,” Smart said. “But our team, not our team, but some of our players needed recovery more than they needed just to get better.

We all need to get better, but we’ve got some guys that need to get well and get healthy. Hopefully we’re able to do that some.”

Georgia has won five straight over Florida, with the Gators’ last victory in the series coming in 2020. In that game, the Bulldogs were forced to juggle multiple quarterbacks after Stetson Bennett exited early with a shoulder injury.

Saturday’s game is set for 3:30 p.m. on ABC, and it will be the first time the rivalry is played in Atlanta.

Georgia Backfield Just Got An Encouraging Chauncey Bowens Update

Georgias backfield has been waiting on Chauncey Bowens, and there is at least some encouraging movement after a two-game absence. The running back has been dealing with an injury described as being between the toes, and his return to practice this week offered a sign that the recovery is heading in the right direction. He has been working through agility drills, which is a step forward for a group that has had to keep adjusting without him.

Bowens still is not cleared for full contact or game action, so the Florida matchup appears to come too soon. Even so, the fact that he is back on the field at all gives Georgia reason to think he may factor in later this season, depending on how the injury responds over the next stretch. For a team trying to manage depth in the backfield, that kind of progress matters, even if the finish line is still a little ways off. [Read more 🡒]

Georgias Auburn Loss Exposed A Problem Kirby Smart Cant Ignore

Georgias home loss to an unranked opponent was the kind of setback that can linger well beyond one Saturday in Athens, especially when the details point to self-inflicted damage. Costly penalties and turnovers helped drag the Bulldogs into an avoidable defeat, and even with some bright individual performances, the overall picture was hard to miss for Kirby Smart and his staff.

Freshman receiver Craig Dandridge gave the offense a spark with a team-high 88 receiving yards, while linebacker Raylen Wilson turned in a busy day with 10 solo tackles and a sack. Still, the most jarring number belonged to Auburns Byrum Brown, whose 115 rushing yards topped Georgias entire ground game, a mismatch that underscored a problem the Bulldogs cant afford to shrug off as the season moves on. Georgia Fans Are Suddenly Eyeing Sanford Stadium For A Huge Reveal

Georgia fans have spent the day trying to decode a simple butterfly image posted by the athletic departments official social media accounts, and the lack of explanation only added to the buzz. In Athens, even a vague tease can turn into a full-blown guessing game, especially when it appears tied to Sanford Stadium and the kind of announcement that could bring a different crowd to campus for a big fall reveal.

One theory making the rounds points to a concert by Grammy-nominated artist Noah Kahan, with the butterfly imagery echoing what is on his tour website and a countdown timer adding to the speculation. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the clock is clearly ticking, and Georgia fans will not have to wait long to find out whether the tease is about football, music, or something else entirely.
