Georgia is about to find out whether it can close the deal on one of the most important defensive back targets left on its board.
Seth Williams, a four-star defensive back, is set to announce his commitment on July 31, with Georgia and Clemson as his only finalists. For most of the summer, those two programs sat alone at the front of his recruitment, while everyone else tried and failed to break through.
Williams never really entertained the rest of the field. He made it clear early that this was going to come down to Georgia or Clemson, and both schools officially visited him this summer. After those visits, he originally set a July 3 commitment date, a development that looked bad for Georgia because Clemson was widely viewed as the favorite to land him.
Then came the surprise twist: Williams backed off that July 3 decision and pushed things back.
He never explained the delay, but the extra time clearly helped Georgia. What looked like a Clemson lean in early July has shifted, and now Georgia is the program with the predictions in its favor. That doesn’t lock anything in - predictions miss plenty - but it does give Kirby Smart and his staff a real shot to finish the job.
And Georgia needs this one.
The Bulldogs’ class is in solid shape overall, but the defensive back group has been a problem. At one point, Georgia had two top-100 defensive backs committed, and both eventually flipped away, leaving the Bulldogs without a defensive back commit for most of the summer. Adryan Cole finally broke that drought a few weeks ago when he picked Georgia over LSU, Florida and Ole Miss, but one defensive back wasn’t enough to fix the issue.
Williams would go a long way toward doing that. He’s another four-star defensive back, and landing him would give Georgia a much-needed boost in the rankings while addressing the biggest hole in the class.
Clemson still has a path to win out. The Tigers already beat Georgia for a defensive back earlier this summer, and they remain very much alive here. But right now, the momentum appears to be with Georgia as the countdown continues.
