Georgia’s SEC opener comes with a little more weight than the first two weeks, and Saturday’s trip to Arkansas gives the No. 2 Bulldogs their biggest test so far. The game kicks off at Noon EST on ABC, and while Georgia has had a soft start to the season, this is the kind of spot where the Bulldogs can sharpen their edge and keep building toward another run at the SEC crown.
If Georgia is going to make a statement, it may start with Gunner Stockton continuing to do what he’s done every time he’s stepped on the field this year. Through two games, Stockton has led Georgia to a touchdown drive on every possession he has played.
That streak gets a real SEC test now, but the expectation here is that it survives another week against Arkansas. He won’t have to carry the whole load either, with Nate Frazier giving Georgia a dangerous option out of the backfield.
Frazier has been off to an incredible start, and he could be a factor again with a touchdown or a few big plays. If Stockton keeps stacking touchdown drives, there’s also a good chance Georgia gets far enough ahead to pull him before he plays the full game, which would only help the streak stay intact.
Georgia also looks primed to reach into the bag of tricks at least once. Even though the smart play would be to keep things as plain as possible with tougher opponents coming later, the Bulldogs are expected to unveil a special-teams fake at some point.
The scenario here is a punt formation that turns into a first down instead of a kick. It would be the kind of call that keeps Arkansas off balance and helps Georgia keep its offense humming, while also serving as a little payback against Razorbacks head coach Ryan Silverfield.
Georgia doesn’t need that play to win, but it may still choose to use it anyway.
And then there’s the defensive side, where Georgia is projected to add another layer to its already impressive non-offensive scoring profile. A social media graphic this week showed which teams had recorded pick-sixes, special teams touchdowns and fumble-recovery touchdowns, and Georgia was already among the small group of schools with both a pick six and a special-teams score.
The one thing missing was a touchdown on a fumble recovery. That changes here, with Georgia becoming the first team to score in all three ways by taking one back to the house after a forced fumble.
