Georgia’s loss to Auburn turned on a handful of numbers that tell the story plain as day: penalties, turnovers, and one quarterback who kept Auburn alive with his legs.
The Dawgs were flagged four times against an unranked opponent at home, and those mistakes kept handing the Tigers fresh chances. Georgia’s defense would string together what looked like a stop, only to have to reset and do it all over again because the flags kept extending Auburn’s life.
The turnover battle was just as damaging. Georgia gave the ball away three times, including a crucial fourth-quarter fumble in a tied game. Coach Smart has hammered ball security over and over, but the Dawgs never cleaned it up, and Auburn kept benefiting from it.
Even with the setback, the loss landed in a familiar place for Kirby Smart’s program. It was only the sixth home loss under Smart, a reminder of how rarely Georgia has fallen at Sanford Stadium during his run.
There were bright spots, too, and Craig Dandridge was one of them. The freshman produced a team-high 88 receiving yards and continued to carve out a bigger role in the offense. He’s been quietly taking on a larger share of the targets, and his ability to stretch defenses vertically kept showing up against Auburn.
Raylen Wilson also delivered a big day on defense. He finished with 10 solo tackles and added a sack while flying around the field and trying to spark the unit. Alongside Chris Cole Jr., Wilson has become a central figure in what looks like one of the best linebacker groups in the conference, and maybe the nation.
But the number that may have been most jarring belonged to Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown. He ran for 115 yards, a figure that stood out even in the context of the upset.
Brown’s scrambling and toughness kept finding answers against Georgia’s defense, and his rushing total actually topped the entire Georgia offense on the ground. Without that production, Auburn doesn’t pull off the impossible in Athens.

Auburn Just Lost A Key Defender As Georgia Watches Closely
Auburn entered its matchup with Georgia already short a linebacker, and the situation around Xavier Atkins only grew more consequential in the hours after the suspension was announced. Coach Alex Golesh said Atkins was not with the team for the game, leaving the Tigers to navigate a key absence in a spot Georgia usually likes to test with depth and tempo.
Atkins then added another layer by saying on social media that he plans to enter the transfer portal after the semester ends, turning a temporary team issue into a longer-term personnel question. For Georgia, it is the kind of development worth watching closely, especially with Auburn still sorting out what comes next for a defender who was no longer available when the teams met. Georgia Suddenly Faces Pressure To Rebound While Keeping Recruiting Momentum
Georgias latest slide in the AP poll came after a loss that exposed the kind of issues Kirby Smarts team usually avoids, with turnovers, penalties and injuries all piling up at the wrong time. Even so, the timing of the bye week gives the Bulldogs a chance to reset physically and mentally, and there is a real expectation inside the program that a healthier roster can help steady things when play resumes.
On the recruiting front, Georgia also picked up some good news with the commitment of Newton County athlete Braylon Miller, a late-blooming prospect who had previously pledged to Liberty. It is the kind of addition that helps soften the sting of a rough Saturday, and it also serves as a reminder that Georgia still has momentum on the trail even while it sorts through the pressure that comes with trying to rebound on the field. Georgias QB Outlook Just Got More Complicated After Auburn
Gunner Stocktons night at Auburn took an early turn when he was briefly pulled after taking a hit, but he came back soon after and finished the game for Georgia. Kirby Smart said Stockton did not suffer a concussion, though he did deal with a stinger, which at least offered some relief on the injury front as the Bulldogs move on from a tense SEC road test.
The bigger concern now is what came with the rest of that performance. Stockton had three turnovers, the first time in his career he has been charged with that many in one game, and it leaves Georgia with a much more complicated quarterback picture than it had before the trip to Auburn. Even without a serious injury issue, the Bulldogs now have to sort through what the outing means for the offense and for Stockton moving forward. [Read more 🡒]
