Georgia’s wait for a recruiting win may stretch a little longer.
Four-star offensive lineman Nate Carson has set his commitment for Friday, July 3, with Clemson, Colorado, Georgia and South Carolina still in the mix. Carson, one of the top uncommitted offensive linemen in the class, said, "It's really a business."
Carson’s recruitment has played out over a busy summer of official visits. Clemson got the first look on June 5, Georgia followed on June 5, then Colorado and South Carolina rounded out the four finalists as he worked through his decision.
For Georgia, the timing matters. The Bulldogs have gone two weeks without a commitment, and June has been the key month for players across the country to announce. Georgia’s last pledge came on June 16, and that dry spell has only added to a rough stretch on the trail.
The Bulldogs already have five offensive linemen committed, so landing Carson would give them a sixth and likely close out their pursuit at the position. But the signs here are not pointing Georgia’s way.
This has already been a difficult run for Georgia. The Bulldogs recently lost a five-star recruitment to Ohio State, and before that a four-star defensive back who had looked heavily favoring Georgia ended up choosing Clemson.
Carson could stop the slide, but the current buzz suggests otherwise. 247Sports does not have a prediction in yet, while On3 is strongly leaning toward South Carolina and gives the Gamecocks more than a 90 percent chance to land him.
That leaves Georgia with a slim opening, but not much more than that. Anything can still happen before Friday, yet the Bulldogs would need a major shift to pull Carson into their class.

Georgia Fans Will Have Strong Feelings About This 5-Star RB Twist
David Gabriel-Georges has become one of the most intriguing names on the summer recruiting board, and his path has now taken an unexpected turn for Georgia. The five-star running back, ranked as the No. 2 player at his position nationally, is expected to announce his college commitment in July, but his recruitment with the Bulldogs effectively ended when he canceled his official visit to Athens.
For Georgia fans, the timing stings a little more because this was always going to be a major talent chase, and now it shifts entirely to what comes next in his process. Reports have pointed to a significant NIL package as a major factor in his decision-making, which only adds to the intrigue around where the elite back lands and how the Bulldogs adjust their board with a key July decision still looming. Georgia Fans Are Missing The Real Kirby Smart Recruiting Debate
The hand-wringing around Georgias 2027 recruiting standing misses a bigger point about how college football actually works now. Elite classes still matter, but the sport has shifted enough that rankings alone no longer tell you much about who will end up in the CFP picture. In the NIL and transfer portal era, the path to sustained success has become more complicated, with coaching, player development, culture and roster management carrying far more weight than they used to.
Kirby Smarts program is the clearest example of that change, because Georgia has continued to stack top-end talent while also proving it can turn that talent into results. The Bulldogs 2025 class finished second and the team landed third in the CFP rankings, which says plenty about the programs broader formula. It also explains why a transfer like Zachariah Branch could matter so much, and why the real debate around Georgia is less about one recruiting ranking than how Smart keeps the whole machine moving. Georgia Fans Have Seen This Recruiting Panic Before
A quick glance at Georgias 2027 recruiting class is enough to make the fan base uneasy, with the group sitting 17th in the 247Sports composite and seventh among SEC schools. But the Bulldogs have lived through enough recruiting cycles to know that the early winter mood around a class rarely tells the whole story, especially when the class still includes two five-star commitments and the kind of headline talent that can change fast once the calendar turns.
Georgia fans also have a built-in reminder that rankings and commitments are only part of the picture. The 2018 class looked one way on paper and ended up producing a far different mix of outcomes, with some elite recruits taking divergent paths while lower-rated signees grew into the backbone of the 2021 national championship team. In an era shaped by NIL and the transfer portal, the Bulldogs are managing more moving parts than ever, and the real story usually takes longer to reveal itself than the recruiting table suggests.
