Georgia may be closing in on a major recruiting win.
Four-star defensive back Seth Williams is set to announce his commitment on July 31, and after spending a long stretch with Georgia and Clemson as his two finalists, the race has suddenly shifted toward the Bulldogs. On Wednesday, Georgia picked up its first prediction on 247Sports to land Williams, a notable change after Clemson had been viewed as the leader for much of the process.
That was not always the case. Williams had originally planned to make his decision on July 3, when both 247Sports and On3 had Clemson pegged as the favorite.
But he backed off that announcement just days before the date, a move that suggested Georgia had made a real push in the recruitment. Since Georgia and Clemson were the only schools to host him on official visits, the late change pointed directly to the Bulldogs as the program applying pressure.
Williams later reset his commitment date for July 31, though he still took his time before settling on a final choice. Now, the expectation is that Georgia could get the news it has been waiting for on Friday.
If the Bulldogs do land Williams, it would count as one of their biggest recruiting victories of the year. Georgia’s 2027 class sits just outside the top 10, and one of the reasons is the lack of defensive backs in the group. Right now, the Bulldogs have only one defensive back committed, which is far below the number programs typically want in a class.
Williams would give Georgia its second defensive back pledge, and that matters for more than one reason. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 247 overall player in the country, a sign of how highly he is regarded. He is also from Georgia, which would make the win even more valuable for the Bulldogs.
And there is the Clemson factor. Beating the Tigers for a recruit is never a small thing, especially with Clemson standing as one of the ACC’s top programs and one of Georgia’s secondary rivals.
Georgia still has to finish the job, and recruiting always leaves room for surprises. But at the moment, the Bulldogs look like the team in position to come out on top.
