Florida Just Made A QB Choice Georgia Fans Will Notice

With tensions rising in the Florida Gators' camp over the controversial quarterback decision, the team's cohesion faces a critical test ahead of their clash with Georgia.

Florida’s quarterback decision for Georgia came with a side of drama, and maybe a little self-inflicted chaos.

On Friday, the Gators announced that Aaron Philo will start against Georgia this weekend. The call came after Philo and backup Tramell Jones were both questionable to play this week against Florida, but in the end Florida stuck with the quarterback who won the job out of fall camp and has started six of the team’s seven games this season.

That choice was hardly a surprise on paper. It was also easy to see why plenty around the program would have preferred Jones.

Jones is 1-0 this season after steering Florida to an upset win over Texas in the team’s last game two weeks ago. Philo, meanwhile, is 4-2, with losses to Missouri and South Carolina.

The reaction from Florida fans was immediate once the news broke. There was already a big debate over which quarterback should get the nod against Georgia, and the announcement made it clear that not everyone was on board.

“I disagree with this heavily Jon.

Tramell just won at Texas…

Better hope Philo wins this weekend. https://t.co/U0GCh1w19b

That kind of split is exactly what can turn a quarterback call into a bigger issue than the game itself. If fans were divided, it’s fair to wonder whether the same thing was true inside the program.

There were likely coaches and players who wanted Philo, and others who wanted Jones. Either way, Florida now has to live with the choice.

And that’s where the timing becomes a problem. If Philo gets off to a rough start, Florida will have to decide whether to stay with him or turn to Jones. No matter which way that goes, somebody in the building is probably going to be unhappy.

This might have been avoided if Florida had made the call as soon as the Texas game ended, saying Philo would be the starter going forward if healthy. Instead, the uncertainty hung around for nearly two weeks, and that left room for the debate to grow.

There’s also the matchup itself. Florida has every reason to believe Philo is the right choice, since he was the one who won the job in camp. But Georgia may have been just fine with that outcome too.

Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown gave Georgia major problems on the ground two weeks ago, running the ball more than 20 times for 115 yards in Auburn’s upset win in Athens. Georgia had no clear answer for the way Auburn used his legs.

That’s where Jones looks different. He is not as experienced as Philo, but he is a better runner, averaging two more yards per carry than Philo. By going with Philo, Florida is putting a pocket passer on the field instead of a dual-threat quarterback.

Philo is still a capable option. He led Florida to a win over Ole Miss this season.

But the Gators may have done more than stir up a quarterback debate. They may have handed Georgia the player it wanted to see all along.

Georgia Could Get A Crucial Defensive Boost At Florida

Georgias secondary is set to get a timely lift with KJ Bolden expected to play against Florida on Saturday. Bolden had been listed as questionable earlier in the week after missing the Auburn game with an injury he picked up three weeks ago, but the outlook now points toward him being close to full health.

His return matters for a Georgia defense heading into a critical stretch against ranked opponents, where depth and stability in the back end can make a real difference. Getting Bolden back now gives the Bulldogs another experienced piece as the schedule tightens and the margin for error gets smaller. [Read more 🡒]

Georgia Gets A Huge Rivalry Boost For Florida Showdown

Talyn Taylor is set to finally get his first shot at Florida, a notable development for Georgia as the rivalry heads to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The wide receiver missed last years meeting because of injury, so his availability adds another layer to a matchup that already carries plenty of weight for the Bulldogs.

This years showdown also comes with a rare backdrop, since it will be the first time the ranked teams have met since 2002. With the game set for a national ABC broadcast and multiple viewing options available, Georgia fans will have no trouble keeping close tabs on a rivalry game that already feels bigger than the usual late-October stop on the calendar. Florida Heads Into Georgia With One Big WR Concern

Floridas passing game could be operating short-handed when it walks into Jacksonville for the rivalry matchup with Georgia. Vernell Brown III has been downgraded to questionable because of a lingering knee injury, and he has not played since late September, leaving Florida without one of the receivers it would like to have available in a game that usually demands clean execution and depth on the perimeter.

Bailey Stockton is also on the injury report as questionable after previously being doubtful, adding another layer of uncertainty to Floridas receiving room. For a team trying to keep pace against Georgia, the availability of those two pass-catchers could shape how much the Gators can lean on their aerial attack, and it is one of the more important pregame questions hanging over the matchup.
