Florida’s opening-night explosion came with one catch: Eric Singleton left the game with a leg injury, and that could be the one thing that dulls an otherwise electric Week 1 showing.
The Gators wasted no time setting the tone against Florida Atlantic, rolling to 66 points and getting the scoring party started when Vernell Brown III turned a WR screen into a 49-yard touchdown. The play lit up the Swamp and gave Jon Sumrall’s era a jolt right out of the gate, with Singleton helping spring it by blocking on the perimeter.
That block may have cost Florida a key piece, though. Singleton was rolled up on the play and exited with a leg injury.

The hope around Gainesville is that the injury isn’t serious, because Singleton was brought in to be a major part of this offense. He arrived as a high-profile portal addition after spending last season at Auburn, and he reunited with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, whom he played for at Georgia Tech before Faulkner moved on after the 2024 season.
Singleton has already built a reputation as one of the country’s most productive receivers. Over his first three seasons, he has averaged 54 catches per year and piled up more than 2,000 career receiving yards. With Dallas Wilson and Brown already in the mix, Florida expected Singleton to be the extra weapon that makes defenses choose their poison.
That expectation was reflected in what Aaron Philo said in August:
"I think all the guys in that receiver room... [have] really pushed him to be the best that he can be," Aaron Philo said of Singleton in August. "He's not afraid of competition.
He comes in every day and works his butt off. I'm really excited for him and what he's going to be able to do this season."
There’s at least some reason for optimism that Florida may not need to rush him back. The passing game looked sharp even after Singleton went out, with Brown finishing as the top receiver with 117 yards and a touchdown on six catches.
TJ Abrams added a 63-yard grab, and Bailey Stockton caught a touchdown. If Singleton is sidelined for any stretch, both Abrams and Stockton figure to see more snaps.
Florida also got encouraging signs from the quarterback spot. The worries about Philo’s inexperience haven’t shown up yet, and his control of Faulkner’s offense has been obvious from the opening snap. He was accurate, decisive, and productive as both a passer and runner, piling up nearly 300 yards of total offense and three touchdowns.
And then there’s Jadan Baugh, who keeps making the kind of plays that don’t require much explanation.

For Florida, Week 1 brought a lot to celebrate. Sumrall’s emphasis on effort and physicality showed up immediately, and the offense looked explosive from the start. The only real concern is Singleton’s leg injury, because if he misses significant time, it could be the one thing that keeps this group from reaching its ceiling once the schedule gets tougher in a couple of weeks.
