Christian Barmore’s Arraignment Delayed as Patriots Prepare for Super Bowl LX
As the New England Patriots gear up for their Super Bowl showdown against the Seattle Seahawks, one of their key defensive contributors, Christian Barmore, is facing a legal matter that’s now been pushed further down the calendar.
Barmore, the Patriots' standout defensive tackle, was originally scheduled to be arraigned on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge on February 3-just days before the team takes the field in Super Bowl LX. That timing would’ve posed a logistical challenge, given the team’s travel plans to California ahead of the big game.
But on Friday, an Attleboro District Court judge granted a motion to reschedule the arraignment, moving the date to March 9. The decision came before the Patriots took on the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game, a matchup that ultimately punched their ticket to the Super Bowl.
The Allegations
The case stems from an incident that reportedly occurred in August, involving Barmore and his girlfriend. According to court documents, the dispute began over something as seemingly minor as the thermostat setting-she had it at 70 degrees, and Barmore allegedly wanted it at 68. But the situation escalated.
The woman told investigators that Barmore took her phone and grabbed her by the shirt near her neck. She also claimed he threw her to the floor, resulting in bruises.
A photo of the alleged injuries was included in the police report. Despite the incident taking place in August, charges weren’t filed until about a month later.
The woman told police she initially hesitated to come forward, citing concerns over Barmore’s financial resources and the potential impact on her life.
She ultimately filed criminal charges on September 9, and a formal complaint was issued on December 16.
Barmore's Response and the Patriots' Stance
Barmore, through his attorney, has denied any criminal wrongdoing. The Patriots have been aware of the allegations since the time of the incident, according to head coach Mike Vrabel, who addressed the situation back in December. The NFL has also weighed in, stating that Barmore remains eligible to play while the legal process unfolds.
This legal development comes at a high-stakes moment for New England, as they prepare for their biggest game of the season. The timing of the arraignment delay means Barmore will remain available to contribute on the field, where he’s been a disruptive force on the defensive line throughout the postseason.
Broader Context
It’s worth noting that the charges against Barmore surfaced just two days after news broke that wide receiver Stefon Diggs is also facing legal issues in a separate case involving allegations of assaulting his personal chef.
While both situations are unfolding independently, they cast a shadow over the Patriots’ otherwise impressive run to the Super Bowl. As the legal process plays out, the team-and the league-will continue to monitor both cases closely.
For now, Barmore’s focus remains on football, with his next court date set for March 9, after the dust has settled on the NFL’s biggest stage.
