Eric Stokes, once a promising first-round pick for the Green Bay Packers, has found a new home and a fresh start with the Las Vegas Raiders. After four seasons in Green Bay that didn’t quite meet expectations, the Packers opted not to pick up his fifth-year option.
This led Stokes to sign a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Raiders last offseason. Now, his performance has paid off in a big way.
The Raiders have inked Stokes to a three-year, $30 million extension, with a solid $20 million guaranteed. This deal, orchestrated by agent David Mulugheta of Athletes First, keeps Stokes in Las Vegas as a key piece of their defensive puzzle.
The Raiders are in the midst of a significant rebuild, armed with $121.7 million in cap space, thanks in part to the trade of Maxx Crosby. Stokes’ extension is a strategic move to ensure a veteran presence in their secondary, as the team looks to reshape its identity under the leadership of Tom Brady and new head coach Klint Kubiak.
Looking ahead, the Raiders are poised to make a splash in the upcoming draft. With the No. 1 overall pick, they’re likely to select quarterback Fernando Mendoza, setting the stage for a new era in Las Vegas. Additionally, holding the No. 14 pick gives them the opportunity to bolster their offense further, potentially by adding a top-tier wide receiver.
While the Raiders might not be immediate playoff contenders in the fiercely competitive AFC West, the combination of Stokes’ defensive prowess and the fresh offensive talent provides a promising foundation for the future. The Raiders are clearly building something intriguing in Las Vegas, and Eric Stokes is set to be a significant part of that journey.
