The Atlanta Braves could use another front-line arm, too. But MLB insider Jon Morosi says the Philadelphia Phillies are in the mix as well, and that wrinkle changes the picture.
“The Phillies are among several teams that scouted Tarik Skubal’s start last weekend. Philly has lost 6 of 7. Scott Harris has traded 3 pitchers to the Phillies since arriving to Detroit: Soto, Lorenzen, Manning,” Morosi wrote on X.
For a team that many didn’t even have on the radar for Skubal, the Phillies’ interest stands out. Philadelphia has four solid starters, but its rotation numbers still sit 11th in starting pitchers' ERA, and Aaron Nola’s 3-9 record with a 5.61 ERA has weighed on that group.
The bigger hole, though, may be in the bullpen. The Phillies rank 22nd in bullpen ERA, and that’s the area most around the game expect them to attack.
Whether any of this matters depends on one thing: will Detroit actually move Skubal?
The Tigers are 51-57 and fourth in the AL Central, but they’re still in a division where they trail the Chicago White Sox by five games. If they think a run is still there, they could decide to keep their two-time AL Cy Young winner and let the rumor mill cool off, at least for now.
