Alabama Finally Responded After Raylen Wilson Postgame Confrontation

In response to a widely-publicized post-game incident, Alabama swiftly addresses fan misconduct following Georgia's victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Alabama says it has identified the fan who shoved Georgia linebacker Raylen Wilson after Saturday night’s game at Bryant-Denny Stadium and has already taken “appropriate action.”

The university confirmed the move in a statement provided to the Tuscaloosa News on Thursday, days after the incident was caught on video and spread across social media. Alabama did not say what the punishment was or whether the fan will be barred from future athletic events.

“Alabama has identified and taken appropriate action against the individual involved in videos circulating on social media following Saturday night's football game,” the university said. “We take matters of this nature seriously and will not tolerate this behavior.”

The video, shot by 11Alive reporter Reggie Chatman Jr., shows the fan leaning over a barrier near the stands with a cup in his left hand, slapping Wilson’s helmet twice and then shoving it while shouting obscenities. Wilson, who appeared startled, kept moving and did not respond physically.

Wilson later described the moment in an Instagram comment, saying he first thought the man was on Georgia’s side.

“I thought dude was a UGA fan tried to dap em up,” Wilson wrote.

That detail stood out to Kirby Smart when he spoke Monday. Georgia’s head coach said Wilson handled the situation the right way.

“I don't know that you can predict; you want people to make good decisions and do things the right way, and Raylen certainly did there,” Smart said.

Smart also pointed to Wilson’s mistaken read of the situation in the moment.

“It’s disappointing behavior by any fan, and certainly nothing we condone,” Smart said. “I'm sure Alabama doesn't condone it either.”

The confrontation was only part of a messy scene after the final whistle. WSB-TV’s Alison Mastrangelo reported that some Alabama fans threw bottles, cans and other objects toward Georgia players as they left the field, and Georgia coaches told players to keep their helmets on while heading to the tunnel.

The game itself ended with plenty of controversy, too. With 3:28 left and Georgia leading 20-17, officials did not call pass interference on Georgia safety KJ Bolden on a second-down throw intended for Crimson Tide receiver Rico Scott in the end zone. The missed flag drew criticism after the game, but Alabama’s statements made clear that a disputed call does not excuse what happened in the stands.

Earlier in the week, Alabama said it was still gathering information.

“We are disappointed by the unacceptable behavior exhibited by some of the game's attendees Saturday night and are in the process of gathering information,” an Alabama spokesperson said. “Alabama takes matters of fan conduct seriously and expects everyone at our events to demonstrate respect to the student-athletes, coaches, staff, officials, and visitors. Such conduct will not be tolerated.”

For Georgia, the night carried real meaning beyond the ugliness after the whistle. The Bulldogs won in Tuscaloosa for the first time since 2007 and gave Smart his first regular-season victory over Alabama as Georgia’s head coach. The result also pushed Georgia to No. 1 in both major polls.

Wilson was right in the middle of it. One of Georgia’s four captains, he finished with a team-high nine tackles as the Bulldogs held Alabama, which had been averaging 49.6 points per game, to 17 points and only a field goal after halftime. Through six games, Wilson leads Georgia with 33 tackles and three sacks.

No. 1 Georgia (6-0, 4-0 SEC) returns to Sanford Stadium on Saturday to face Auburn (3-2, 1-2) at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Gunner Stockton Faces A Bigger Test As Georgia's Backfield Thins

Gunner Stockton is one of the names getting early Heisman buzz, but the more immediate concern for Georgia is the shape of its backfield as the schedule keeps getting tougher. The Bulldogs have leaned on Stockton to steady the offense, and his upcoming matchup now comes with added importance because the people around him may not be as plentiful as before.

For Georgia, that changes the equation in a hurry. A thinner backfield can put more on the quarterbacks plate, especially when the defense knows the game plan may have to be trimmed and every possession matters. Stockton has already put himself in the national conversation, but this next stretch will say a lot about how well he can carry it when the margins get tighter. [Read more 🡒]

Georgia Secondary Suddenly Has A Bigger Auburn Concern Than Fans Expected

Georgias secondary got a little more complicated heading into Auburn week when the Bulldogs released an updated injury report that pushed safety KJ Bolden to doubtful. Georgia has dealt with absences elsewhere on the roster as well, but Boldens status stands out because it comes against an Auburn team the Bulldogs will want to handle cleanly on the back end. Even with the uncertainty, Georgia does have ways to shuffle pieces around in the defensive backfield if needed.

The bigger issue now is simply waiting for the next round of availability updates as the SEC continues to release injury reports before kickoff. Georgia will have to keep preparing for multiple scenarios, especially if Bolden cannot go, since the staff may need to adjust the secondary on short notice. For a defense that wants stability entering a rivalry game, the timing is not ideal. [Read more 🡒]

Georgia Faces A Rivalry Test That Could Say A Lot Saturday

Auburns trip to Athens arrives with the kind of backdrop that usually makes October feel bigger than the schedule says it should. Georgia is unbeaten at 6-0, Auburn comes in at 3-2, and the Bulldogs have controlled the series with nine straight wins, but Kirby Smart has spent enough time around this rivalry to know records only explain so much when these two line up. The game is set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, with the usual SEC edge hanging over it from the start.

Smart also pointed to Auburns new coach as part of what makes this one worth watching, which is hardly surprising in a series that tends to sharpen even ordinary weeks. For Georgia, the bigger question is not just whether it can extend the streak, but whether it can handle the kind of test that reveals how sturdy an undefeated start really is. [Read more 🡒]
