Georgia’s offensive line picture may already have a surprise name in it, and it comes from a player few expected to be in the mix this soon.
David Pollack said true freshman Zykie Helton could step in and start for Georgia this fall, a notable prediction given that Helton arrived as a former three-star recruit out of high school. Pollack was direct about what he thinks Helton can become up front: "(Zykie) Helton, to me, on the offensive line, the freshman is going to come in and start immediately and make a name for himself up front and be an absolute animal," Pollack said via ugawire.usatoday.com.
That kind of projection would be unusual for a true freshman on Georgia’s offensive line, though it did happen last season when Juan Gaston started the opener. The difference is that Gaston came in as a five-star recruit with immediate-start buzz already attached to him. Helton, by contrast, was not viewed that way coming out of high school, and most observers did not expect him to play a major role this year.
Still, Georgia has openings after losing key offensive line pieces to the NFL Draft, which creates a path for someone to grab a job. It may not be the name fans expected, but if Helton earns it, he earns it.
There’s also a bigger message baked into the possibility of Helton starting. Georgia’s 2027 recruiting class currently sits at No. 16 nationally, and some fans have taken issue with the fact that 10 of the Bulldogs’ 18 commits are three-star recruits. Helton would be a reminder that those labels do not carry much weight once a player gets to Athens.
Kirby Smart has made it clear over time that the rankings stop mattering once the players are on campus. He plays the guys who give Georgia the best chance to win, and that means the best 22 will start, regardless of what they were rated in high school. If a true freshman three-star like Helton wins a starting job, that says plenty about how Georgia evaluates and develops talent.
And that’s really the point here. Fans can obsess over stars if they want, but Smart’s track record speaks for itself. If he believes a player is ready to help Georgia win, he’s usually right.

Jimbo Fisher Just Delivered An Unexpected Georgia Message Behind Kirby Smart
Jimbo Fishers latest comments offered an unexpected angle on Georgia, and it had less to do with the Bulldogs on the field than with the man helping run the athletic department. Fisher pointed to his respect for Josh Brooks, the Georgia athletic director, as the reason for his warm view of the program, a connection that traces back to their time together at LSU. Fisher praised Brooks for his consistency, focus and broad understanding of athletic administration, putting him among the best in college football.
Brooks, for his part, has long had his own appreciation for Fisher and the lessons he picked up while working around him at LSU. The relationship adds an unusual layer to Georgias off-field story, especially because it ties one of the sports more recognizable coaches to a key figure in Athens. And it leaves the bigger question hanging over the conversation: just how much of Georgias rise, in Fishers eyes, comes from the people behind the scenes. [Read more 🡒]
Georgia Just Delivered A Massive Recruiting And NIL Statement
Georgias offseason momentum keeps coming from every corner of the athletic department. After a 2026 baseball season that ended with SEC championships and a College World Series appearance, the Bulldogs have climbed back to No. 1 in the Transfer Portal rankings, a sign that the programs success on the field is still translating into real roster-building power.
The same kind of pull is showing up in football, where six current Bulldogs and one incoming five-star recruit just signed a new NIL deal with Nike, another reminder that Georgia remains one of the sports most attractive brands. Add in the continued buzz around the recruiting trail, and it is clear the Bulldogs are not just winning games, they are stacking advantages that keep the rest of the country chasing. [Read more 🡒]
