Rylan Kennedy Shows Off New Defensive Versatility At Florida State

Rylan Kennedy is gearing up for a standout season with Florida State, aiming to bring versatility and strength to the Seminoles' defense.

Florida State's senior defensive end, Rylan Kennedy, is laser-focused as he gears up for his final season with the Seminoles. Fresh off spring break, Kennedy is all about making a lasting impact on the field.

"It’s my last year, so I want to provide for the team and be my best," Kennedy emphasized, reflecting his commitment to excellence as he prepares for Saturday's scrimmage-his first with FSU.

Kennedy's approach is straightforward: "My mindset is to just keep being a dog, ain't nothing different," he said. "During the scrimmage, you'll see me work hard, get to the QB, play the run, do everything."

FSU is counting on Kennedy, a key player on the defensive front and especially on the edge. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 246 pounds, Kennedy brings a wealth of experience from his time at Texas A&M, where he played in 37 games and made significant contributions.

Transitioning to FSU, Kennedy is diving into the defensive playbook, absorbing knowledge from defensive ends coach Nick Williams and teammates. He praised the competitive environment, noting how fellow defensive end Jalen Anderson pushes him to excel.

"I love to ask questions. Closed mouths don't get fed," Kennedy explained.

"Especially as an older guy, I've got to ask simple questions as a pass rusher. We’ve got Coach Nick, who is new too, so we’re all learning together."

Kennedy is working on becoming a complete player, focusing on strengthening his run defense. "I've put on some weight, and I feel like it has really helped me develop," he said. His weight has increased from 241 to 248 pounds, with a goal of reaching 255 pounds for the season.

In the FSU defensive scheme, Kennedy feels liberated. "I feel more free and comfortable, because they want me to be positionless," he shared. This versatility allows him to line up on both sides, play some linebacker, rush up the middle, and cover when needed.

As Kennedy prepares for his final campaign, his focus is on proving his capabilities and bolstering FSU's defensive strength. "I’m just trying to win and do what's best for myself and my team," he declared, eager to showcase his skills and contribute to the Seminoles' success.
