Norvell Sends Florida State A Clear Message Before Louisville

With momentum from a commanding win over Virginia, Florida State braces for a test against Louisville, as Coach Mike Norvell stresses the need to earn every victory.

Florida State’s 38-7 win over Virginia gave Mike Norvell a lot to like, but Monday’s message was clear: the Seminoles can’t live off one emphatic Saturday.

With Louisville up next on a short week, Norvell leaned into the challenge ahead.

“Excited for the opportunity, the stage, the challenge that’s in front of us.”

Florida State is 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC after the win, while Louisville enters at 2-3 and 1-2 in conference play. Norvell said the Seminoles were able to put together “45 minutes, really good football,” but he was just as quick to point out there’s more to clean up.

“We still have left plenty out there that I know we can continue to improve upon, but it was a dominant win against a quality opponent.”

The defense, in particular, drew strong praise after a performance that buried Virginia early and often. Florida State finished with 10 sacks, a number Norvell said he couldn’t even immediately recall seeing at the program before.

“I thought (our) defense overwhelmed them with physicality, speed, just emotion. To have 10 sacks, I don’t know the last time that we’ve had 10 sacks here.”

The numbers behind that pressure were ugly for Virginia. The Cavaliers went 3-for-15 on third down and 0-for-4 on fourth down, and Norvell treated those fourth-down stops like extra takeaways.

“They were 3-for-15…on third down, but then 0-for-4 on fourth down. Every one of those fourth-down stops is a takeaway.”

“We had five three-and-outs. That’s dominant style of defense.”

Norvell also singled out the defensive front, saying the group handled its assignment with discipline while attacking a veteran offensive line.

“They were clean in how they played. They were aggressive attacking a very experienced offensive line group.”

He credited Tony White for the game plan and also pointed to Nick Williams and Terrance Knighton for helping the line keep developing.

“had a great plan”

“outstanding job of continuing to bring guys along.”

On offense, Norvell highlighted Ashton Daniel’s school-record five rushing touchdowns and called it a performance that stood out for more than just the stat line.

“It’s a special performance.”

He tied that outing to Daniel’s command of the offense and the responsibility he’s carrying.

“his ownership of the offense and the things he’s being asked to do.”

Norvell also explained the 81-yard touchdown run, saying the play was adjusted right before the snap and wasn’t something the team had practiced.

“It was a different formation. We hadn’t repped it. … They brought a pressure, which Ashton was alert of.”

Daniels initially looked ready to throw before planting and following Ousmane Kromah into space.

“All of a sudden, (I) heard Ashton say, ‘Go, go.’ … He saw color to block, he hit it.”

Florida State has been nearly automatic once it gets close. The Seminoles are 21-for-21 in the red zone this season, the best scoring rate in the country, and 17 of those trips have ended in touchdowns, which ranks first in the ACC and 11th nationally.

“We got (in the red zone) four times and scored four touchdowns. I think we’re over 80% touchdowns inside the red zone. That’s the focus.”

“When we get down there, we want points on the board, and specifically, we want six.”

Looking ahead to Louisville, Norvell didn’t soften the assignment.

“It’s going to be a great challenge.”

“This is probably the best three-loss team in the country.”

He praised quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, too.

“He can do it all. … This kid, he really has it all.”

Norvell also said Louisville’s defense has been stretched by injuries, but not stripped of talent.

“They’ve got quite a few draft picks, future draft picks, that are on that side of the ball.”

“It’s going to be a real hard-nosed, tough ACC matchup. Friday night, all eyes on us.”

For Norvell, the Virginia win was as much about what Florida State has built behind the scenes as what happened on the field.

“That’s 10 months of work of guys that truly do care about each other. … What does that mean moving forward?

We got to go earn it. We got to earn it this week.”

Wide receiver Micahi Danzy said the performance felt like the kind of Florida State showing people have been waiting to see, with both sides controlling the game. He said the next step is proving it travels, while also pointing to confidence, the slow starts, and the need to keep sharpening the red-zone work.

Kam Taylor Has A Huge Chance On Florida States New-Look Roster

Florida State heads into the 2026-27 season with a roster that looks almost nothing like the one before it, and that gives Kam Taylor a real opening to make an immediate impact. The transfer from UNC Asheville arrives in Tallahassee with a reputation for athleticism and playmaking, plus the sort of scoring rsum that suggests he can handle a major role right away.

With 12 newcomers set to make up much of the Seminoles new-look group, the early chemistry questions will be as important as any individual skill set. Taylor should be one of the most watched names when Florida State opens exhibition play against Mississippi State on Oct. 10, because the Seminoles will need to find out quickly who can help shape this roster into something cohesive. Micahi Danzy Just Framed Florida States Biggest Test After That Win

Florida States latest conference win did more than push the Seminoles above .500 in 2026. It also gave the locker room a reminder of what can happen when the team stays locked in and keeps the bigger picture in view, and Micahi Danzy was quick to point out that the challenge now is handling the moment without letting it get too big.

Danzys message fit the mood around the program: enjoy the result, stay grounded, and keep building confidence as the season moves forward. For a team trying to turn one good night into lasting momentum, the next stretch will be less about celebrating the breakthrough and more about proving it can carry over. [Read more 🡒]

Ashton Daniels Just Put Florida States Offense In A New Spotlight

Ashton Daniels breakout against Virginia did more than add another convincing win to Florida States rsum. It pushed the Seminoles offense into a new conversation, with the quarterback landing on the Davey OBrien Great 8 and the Midseason Watch List after a performance that paired efficient passing with a relentless ground game in the 38-7 rout. Daniels completed 12 passes for 183 yards, ran for 136 yards and helped the Seminoles control the game from start to finish.

The bigger takeaway is how quickly Daniels has turned one big afternoon into national recognition, while also giving Florida State a clear centerpiece for the stretch run. He was named ACC Quarterback of the Week after setting multiple school and conference marks, and teammate Andre Otto also drew league honors as ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week. The numbers from that Virginia game will get plenty of attention, but the real question now is how high Daniels can keep raising the bar. [Read more 🡒]
