Mike Norvell has a chance to lean on the part of his roster that looks ready-made to change the conversation in Tallahassee: the running backs.
Florida State is bringing back Ousmane Kromah and Samuel Singleton, and adding Texas transfer Quintrevion Wisner, giving Norvell a trio with different tools. Kromah offers a 6-foot-1 frame built to handle contact.
Singleton brings the kind of efficiency that showed up in his seven-yard average last season. Wisner, meanwhile, arrives with the kind of shiftiness that can make tacklers miss in tight spaces.
That matters because Norvell will handle play-calling duties this season, and the Seminoles need the right calls at the right moments. The goal is bigger than just moving the chains. A productive ground game would also take pressure off quarterback Ashton Daniels, who comes into 2026 with turnover concerns after throwing 22 interceptions in his collegiate career.
The pieces are there for Florida State to run the ball with real force. Last season, the Seminoles piled up 2,624 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns as a team, averaging just over five yards per carry. They had two eye-catching outbursts in particular: 498 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in a 66-10 win over Kent State, then 361 yards and five scores the week before against East Texas A&M, when the running backs averaged a little more than seven yards per carry.
Individually, Kromah was the top returning rusher with 408 yards, though he did not score a touchdown. Singleton added 360 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Wisner comes over after leading Texas with 597 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Florida State also has elite receivers Duce Robinson and Micahi Danzy waiting on the outside, but the run game has to do the heavy lifting first. If the backs can wear down defenses, it should open things up for the passing attack and keep Daniels from feeling like he has to force throws into danger.
That kind of balance is what Norvell needs. Complimentary football, especially on the ground, is the path to a better season. If the Seminoles can put it together in fall camp next month and survive a brutal opening stretch in September, they could start to move past the disappointment of seven wins over the last two seasons and quiet the heat around Norvell’s job.
