Norvell Demands More As FSU Shift Emerges

Norvell drives FSU to enhance situational awareness and execution as spring camp progresses, spotlighting rising talents and refining strategies.

Florida State has hit the halfway mark of their spring camp, and Tuesday’s practice was a standout for the offense. Head Coach Mike Norvell was all smiles as he called it the offense's best day yet.

“They were effective in various scenarios,” Norvell shared with the media. “We worked on red zone plays and managed to score a couple of times. We also tackled a backed-up series, focusing heavily on the passing game, and I was impressed with their execution.”

Norvell had high praise for freshmen wide receivers Devin Carter and Jasen Lopez, who continue to impress. “Devin and Jasen are going to be key players for us,” he stated. “They’d have to take a big step back not to see the field this fall.”

Norvell elaborated on Lopez’s progress, highlighting the dual-sport athlete’s rapid adaptation and potential. “I called him out after practice.

He missed the first week, and the second week was just about getting used to things. His first real action was during a scrimmage, and today marked his second padded practice.

He’s making some mistakes, but he’s not holding back. He’s playing with intelligence and adapting quickly.”

Turning to the offensive line, Norvell commended their versatility and football IQ as they navigate position battles. “I like their potential.

They have the size and athleticism. In pass protection, they’re holding their own against some dynamic defensive players.

When they stick to their techniques, they’re impressive.”

Norvell also addressed improvements in communication and operations, which were a focus after Saturday’s scrimmage. “We pushed the tempo and communication today,” he explained.

“We kept coaches on the sidelines more, encouraging players to take charge. We’re more than halfway through spring ball, and while I’m pleased with the progress, there’s still a lot of competition and room for growth.”

With another scrimmage on the horizon, Norvell emphasized the importance of execution and situational awareness. “I want things to be cleaner.

We’ve got new faces, and I’m looking for improvement in situational awareness. We’ll introduce two-minute drills on Thursday and run through scenarios with officials on Saturday.

It’s about letting players showcase where they stand.”

Norvell also touched on the defensive line’s early standouts, the development of the safety group, and the impact of the expanded D-line coaching staff. As the team gears up for the second scrimmage and Legacy Weekend, it’s clear there’s a lot of excitement and potential in the air.
